If you are planning on packing your items you should start getting boxes and packing away rarely used items a couple of weeks before the move in order to avoid stress on the day on the move. Cancelling vital services to your old house is usually done in the month before the move in order to allow sufficient time for the cancellation. Services that require cancelling include gas, telephone lines, internet accounts and electricity and water (depending on the municipality). Failure to cancel these services will result in being charged for a service that you don't use anymore. At the same time, ensure that your new home is receiving these services from your move onwards. The worst move is one where you arrive at your new house to find that the electricity and water are not connected.

Change of address notifications need to be sent out so that your bills and letters arrive at the correct address. Luckily these most of these changes can be done online and should be done in the week before the move as doing it earlier will cause your bills to be sent to the new address while you still live at the old address.

As with most large cities, where you choose to live in London will largely depend on where you work and how much you earn. Locations closer to the city centre will be smaller and more expensive than houses on the outskirts. Good places for young professionals include Battersea, Wandsworth, Putney and Fullham, while Hoxton, Brick Lane and Camden are more popular with the trendy crowd. There are relatively few "bad" areas in London but areas that should be avoided include White City, Stockwell and Brixton. Before selecting a place to stay visit the area to determine whether it will suit you.
