Moving Home – Planning for an Effective Move
Moving can be a daunting task
Moving can be a daunting task. The year my husband and I got married we moved at least three times. While we hated to constant moving around we starting to become experts in what it took to move efficiently.
The key is to be organized. First, start by generating a timeline. Think about when you have to be out of your current location and give yourself a cushion of several days in case the unexpected comes up.
Next mark a calendar allotting enough time for each moving task. Examples include: purchasing (or finding) boxes and other moving materials, hiring movers or recruiting friends to help, actual packing. Note that actual packing usually takes longer than you think.
While you're packing be sure to make the boxes with what is in them to facilitate the moving and unpacking process. In particular, it is very useful to mark the room the box will be going to in your new home. This will save you a LOT of time in the future.
Next, figure out what has to happen after you move. You will probably need to change your address with the post office and update any important accounts (credit cards, bank statements, etc.) Make a list of all the businesses you will need to contact with your updated information. You may also want to update friends and family with your new address. Our realtor had a great idea. She took a picture of our new home and put it on a post card.
Before moving I would also recommend setting up utilities in your new place. Some utilities, like the cable company, may need to come out to your home and do a visual inspection or deliver equipment. You may want to set these up for the day you intend to unpack, which means you will minimize the amount of time you need to wait at home and possibly miss work.
Finally it will be time to unpack. Try to do this as quickly as possible. If you don't get to a box for an extended amount of time, think about if you really need the contents of that box. Perhaps it's something you can get rid of at the next garage sale. Also, you will probably have a lot of extra trash or recycling, e.g. moving boxes and other packaging materials. You may want to arrange for a bulk trash pickup to get rid of the clutter.
