Moving On Up: Five Films About Empowered Women On Satellite Tv
If there's anything that can really drag a woman down
, it's a no-good man. And while that might not a be a popular refrain to sing in this day and age, popular culture has proven this truism again and again. Whether it's a scrub boyfriend who refuses to get a job yet won't move out or a suave charmer who turns out to be anything but, there are plenty of stories that involve men who just aren't good to women--and women who end up having to deal with the drama for more than they should.
Handling this kind of trouble isn't something that should be wished on any women, and sometimes finding a decent way to escape from the stresses of a bad relationship--or to get the energy to decide to ditch a deadbeat--can be as simple as hearing the right song or watching the proper movie. And while there are plenty of one-dimensional depictions of less-than-decent situations on the silver screen and on satellite tv, some actually offer a view at something better. These types of films can be quite empowering, and definitely offer a glimpse into just how good life can be once women decide to ditch losers and get on with what they need for themselves.
For women who are looking for role models, women who just want a film that depicts a happy ending, or women who need entertainment that hits a bit closer to home, here are five films about empowered ladies who manage to ditch the dead weight in their lives. Most are easy to find on satellite tv, and all are worth checking out at least once.
#1 - Waiting to Exhale. A hodgepodge of stories about women and their relationships, with the ladies banding together to help out friends who might not be able to set their own lives on track. Inspiring and the kind of film that gets that there might be more at stake than just telling a man off if he's wronging you.
#2 - Terminator II. This might not seem like an obvious choice, but in an uncertain world with a whole lot of drama going down, Sarah Connor is able to hold her own, rather than constantly needing to be saved. And in the world of action films, writing a character like this is saying a whole lot. Plus, watching a woman hold her own and handle situations like a seasoned professional is absolutely empowering.
#3 Kill Bill. Because it's not possible to actually go ahead and inflict physical violence on those who have wronged people, this Tarentino homage to classic kung-fu cinema provides the next-best thing: a strong female lead who manages to get even, rather than just getting mad. Uma Thurman manages to serve justice to those who deserve it, and a fleet of other female ninjas and warriors are also out there, proving that they're just as competent as the guys. It also looks great in HDTV.
#4 - The Divorcee. This 1930s film is ahead of its time in terms of allowing the female lead to have the same indiscretions as the males, as well as writing dialogue that shows the women really socking it to the men. But, the trouble with older films like these is that the ending might not feel as empowering. Skip the resolution at the end and focus on the fantastic monologues beforehand, and this is one empowering women sick of dealing with philanderers.
#5 - Thelma and Louise. Again, this film from the 1990s might not have the best go-girl ending, but all of the parts leading up to it--including ditching no-good husbands and thinking about one's own happiness--are definitely empowering in their own right. Also the one of these films that's most likely to be on satellite tv in the afternoon.
