Moving: Try It On Your Own

Begin by collecting clean boxes, newspapers, and other packing materials as soon as you certain you'll be moving

. You may even consider purchasing unprinted newsprint from a local newspaper or art supply store as printed paper tends to leave stains. Boxes can be obtained from liquor stores, supermarkets and a variety of other stores. Simply ask a manager if they have any boxes available. For fragile items, you should consider purchasing a roll or two of bubble wrap.

Shop around you local truck and trailer rental shops. Many of these businesses have special supplies as well as the answers to questions you may have regarding the move ahead. Some even offer storage options! Compare prices and truck/trailer options and be sure to make your reservation 3-4 weeks prior to your move to avoid the hassle of finding a last minute truck.

If you own more than one car, you will need to figure out the best way to get it to your destination. You can ship, tow, sell, or give it away. Perhaps consider having a close friend drive the vehicle! Boats, motorcycles, and trailers can sometimes require additional equipment to be towed. Do the research and check up on the available procedures and costs.

If you're lucky enough to have friends, use them! Ask them to help load and unload the trailer or truck. It's amazing what a difference five or six people can make! Offer to buy drinks and food for all who help out. Make it a party! Moving is hard work but doesn't have to be dull. Treat your helpers with respect and they'll be sure to be back next time.

If you have children, make sure they are entertained and out of the way of moving traffic coming in and out of the house. You may even want to arrange for a babysitter or neighbor to watch the kids while the move is taking place. In this way, you can ensure your kids are both comfortable and safe. Consider leaving a few stuffed animals or toys out for them to take with them on the drive. Moving can be a stressful time for kids too!

Once you're packed up it's time head out! Remember to breathe and enjoy the ride... you've got a lot of unloading to do!
