Mrs Bennett Western Desert Aboriginal Art
Mrs Bennett aka Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa is a lady of the indigenous population of Australia well-known for her traditional works of art
. She was born in 1935 and is well-respected in her profession, although her career only really started very late in her life. Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa was married to John John Bennett Tjapangati until he sadly died.
Mrs Bennett's works of indigenous art can be described as simple to some, abstract to others, and having many meanings to others still. She appears to favour the use of strong contrast, using black on white, cream or yellow. It is said that many of her pieces depict scenes of Aboriginal life, particularly those involving Aboriginal women gathering food, preparing food or taking part in traditional ceremonies. She comes from north-west Australia and several of her works depict life there in the desert. Naturally, needing water to sustain life, the nomadic people would attempt to stay as close as possible to such water, and the Docker River wasone of the most popular and important in that area. In her work, an important ceremonial site can be seen at a place called Yumarra, which is located between Punkilpirri and the Docker River. The black 'U' shapes depicting women camped.
Australian aboriginal art is not restricted to two-dimensional paint on canvas, like so many modern cultures. For centuries of more the people of Australia would use many media to portray images of their lives. Rock paintings, engravings, carvings in trees and even paintings on leaves are just a few examples.
Western desert aboriginal art is no exception and contemporary artists, many of whom are ancestors of the best of past generations, still use traditional methods, media and are lucky enough to have a landscape so far untouched by modern-day humans. Sadly, this is difficult to say for many other places in the world, where humans and their technology have found, settled in, and altered the views of many landscapes. However, in the Australian outback one can see or travel for miles without any signs of modern man and his ugly creations.
Of course Mrs Bennett is a true ancestor of what Australia is really about and is known by both her English name and her original Aboriginal one, (Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa) but for many, that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easily. Approaching eighty years of age,
Nyurapayia Nampitjinpa will not be producing these wonderful works for many more years, and we can but hope that her legacy continues as the genes of her people are slowly becoming diluted and affected by Western colonization.
