. From the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica came such specimens and the scientists will have their hands full with these. One mud sample, according to a college senior, can lead to a multitude of information. This college senior was one of a handful of students and faculty from one college and one university who recently spent a month in Antarctica on an expedition funded by the National Science Foundation. Actually, these schools regularly take part in research cruises of all sorts.

It was in early February when the group left on a research vessel from Punta Arenas Chile. On the east of the Antarctic Peninsula was the Larsen Ice Shelf where they went to which was unknown territory. Absolutely no one ever reached their destination before. The boat moved slowly, using sonar to measure the ocean's depth. Other than getting water and sediment samples, the students and researchers also gathered video footage from the deck. The samples they brought back will take decades to analyze.

Taking note of the modern global warming situation, trace evidences of mud will be analyzed from the amount of water it holds to its composition. The students agree that this is a once in a lifetime trip. It was said by a student that you could really have a taste of how things are. Civilization was lacking, but science was happening 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Student work shifts ran from midnight to noon, or noon to midnight. The usual off day routines for students were watching movies in the group lounge or sleeping on the bunk beds.

Regulations were still implemented for the students. It is important that seniors are informed about serious events. Other than go to a newly found surface volcano, a senior student needed to go to an emperor penguin as well. Such an encounter was enjoyable for this particular Dryden native. The duration of the trip is equal to five weeks of missed classes for the students. When they were on the trip schoolwork was not the main priority for not only did they carry hectic schedules but also had to deal with environmental hazards associated with their vessel. Without any rest time for the ship they did not get much help. They were allowed to send two emails a day and that was it. With their common living areas not to mention fewer distractions to deal with the students and faculty grew close with each other. For one student any escape effort was futile. People grew close as a result of being in a deserted location with a harsh environment.

As they prepared the specimens of mud and rocks they placed these in coolers for their trip back to the United States and each had documents explaining their source for the customs officials. One student also brought back 323 digital pictures and five rolls of film. Experiencing the surroundings was what another student who participated in last year's exploration chose to do. Capturing things is better done live. On occasion, it is a better option to understand your environment.
