Much More To A Watch Than Telling The Time

A watch is something that many of us will own but surprisingly fewer and fewer of us are using them for their original function: telling the time

. The rise of smartphones has meant many of us will simply check the time using the phone, while looking at emails and messages. So the question is; do watches still have a use?

The answer is of course, an overwhelming yes! It has been many years since watches were solely for functional needs, after all watches have been made out of precious metals for decades. Indeed, even when watches were simply made for telling the time, they were not cheap. The first watches were highly sophisticated and as such, very expensive. It is perhaps this expense that has always meant watches were destined to be items of desire and expressions of personality rather than simply being for telling the time.

Modern day watches vary in design, style and colour for exactly this reason; each watch says something unique about its owner. Whether it is a big, bold oversized watch for men who want to make an impact or dainty and fashionable bracelet watch for the distinguished young woman, you can say it all with a watch. In fact many styles of watch are so boundary pushing that you would struggle to even tell the time with them, tiny faces and obscure LED displays can make a statement out of simply function.

The best thing about modern day watches is that they do not have to be expensive to make a statement. Again thanks to digital displays it is possible to create great designs at much lower prices than with traditional watch movements. Furthermore, light weight and long lasting batteries are cheaper than ever which makes watches both smaller and cheaper.

In terms of style and design, watch faces were one of the first elements to be experimented on. There are now two main styles; round and square with each containing many sub categories of styles such as oblong and oval. Many brands now have ranges that contain both of these two main designs including some of the biggest names in the watch world like; Accurist watches, Skagen watches and Citizen watches.

Ultimately, everyone will use a watch for a different reason and so long as you get the style that is right for you there is nothing you can do wrong with a great designer watch. Just make sure you occasionally check the time with it!
