Munich-a Picture Postcard City!
Earlier a small town, Munich soon expanded and gained significance as a full-fledged city
. The town was enclosed within a wall, today one can just see the vestiges of the wall but the gates still remain. Meandering River Isar can be seen passing through the city. When the weather is clear, one can see the majestic Alps. Other important destinations like Austria, Italy and Switzerland are just a hop away. To reach the largest city of South Germany, one can simply buy plane tickets to Munich and explore this beautiful city. These days, many airline discounts are also being offered by travel agents that motivate more and more people to visit this city.
The Old town of Munich offers lot of attractions and sights for the visitors to see. The city is not very big and hence one can explore some of the city area on foot and walk from landmark to another landmark. Using flights to Munich, one can reach this city. Marienplatz - Marien Square and the New Town Hall of Munich
Nestled amidst the heart of Munich, Marienplatz is located in the central square. From here all major buildings, monuments, landmarks and churches are close hence one can choose to walk down to these places and in turn they can also experience the feel of the city. The Marian Column is located within Marienplatz on the top of which a Virgin Marys golden statue is located.
A beautiful carillon, the Glockenspiel is situated on the tower of the New Town Hall. It is about 100 years old. To listen to the chimes of Glockenspiel, one should come here at 11 a.m. or noon and witness historical Bavarian events are re-enacted by 32 life sized figures. This is a wonderful experience. To mark the end of each show, a golden bird chirps three times.
Frauenkirche - Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady
Another prominent landmark of Munich is the Catholic Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady which is the largest church of the city and the church has the capacity of holding 20,000 people. The Munichs skyline is dotted with the silhouettes of the Town Hall and the twin towers of the Cathedral. To have a birds eye view of this beautiful city, one can climb the steps to the towers. The view of illuminated Munich at night and Bavarian Alps in the morning is breathtaking.
Dachau Concentration Camp
To the 10 miles northwest of Munich, the concentration camp of Dachau is located. It was Nazi Germanys first concentration camps in Nazi Germany and served as a model for all those camps that were built later on during Third Reich. Visitors who come here follow the "path of the prisoner"; the same way prisoners of those times were forced to walk after they arrived to the camp. One can see the barracks, baths, crematorium and barracks and can imagine the kind of life led by them.
