Murdered Polish Mans Parents Forgive Killers

Marek Muszynski, aged 40, was found dead in "the line" area of Newry City in 2009

. Lindsay White, aged 23, was sentenced last week at Newry Court to 14 years in prison for her part in the unprovoked attack. Her accomplice Adrian Cunningham aged 20, who pleaded guilty, received a minimum of 11 years imprisonment.

It has been reported that Mr Muszynskis parents Janusz and Mary Muszynski have said that they have forgiven the killers responsible for their sons horrific murder. "We forgive the perpetrators, not everyone can understand this, but it is our will". They further stated "we could not live with hatred and revenge, it would kill us". The family have stated that whilst they are glad that justice had been served, they would never get over losing their son.

It has emerged that the 40 year old Polish man had been invited to Newry with the promise of work in July 2007. Work however never materialised and Mr Muszynski, who had battled with alcoholism, fell on hard times and found no alternative but to sleep on the streets.

Judge David McFarland who presided on Whites case stated that she has shown "little remorse and a limited amount of regret" for the murder. "It was a horrific attack on a drunk and largely defenceless man" he added.

White, who is now pregnant, will likely give birth to her child in Hydebank Womens Prison in September. Her defence barrister refuted allegations that she had deliberately fallen pregnant to get a more lenient sentence. Judge McFarland stated that pregnancy within the prison system would be "difficult for her and there remains uncertainty about whether she will be allowed to keep the child after it is born".

Following sentencing, DCI Talbot issued a statement saying "Marek Muszynski was a 40 year old Polish national who came to Northern Ireland in search of a better life. Tragically his life was taken away from him in a laneway at Upper Edward Street, Newry in July 2009 in an unprovoked, violent and sustained attack. Marek was a totally innocent victim. CCTV images we have released today show White and Cunningham casually walking away from the scene, minutes after the attack, on their way to get a takeaway meal, having taken Mareks last 70p from his pocket. Newry is undoubtedly a safer place today now these two killers are behind bars. We will do our utmost to protect members of all communities and all nationalities in Northern Ireland. Our thoughts are with Mareks family in Poland who were unable to travel to Northern Ireland. Hopefully todays sentencing will provide them with a small degree of comfort after the senseless attack on their innocent loved one so many miles from home".
