The hardware is pretty simple, primarily consisting of a few odds and ends parts. The most important part, I would say, is the piston or spring system used to open and close the bed. Most Murphy bed hardware kits now include a state-of-the-art piston system, while springs are becoming more rare. (The old-time springs tend to be less stable, and have been known to pull the bed closed without warning.)

The pistons allow the bed to be lowered from the wall smoothly and easily, without straining. They counter balance the bed, so when it is closed, it stays closed, and when it's open, it remains open. The system is very much like the pistons that hold an SUV hatchback open.

Woodworkers Supply and Rockler Woodworking have Murphy Bed hardware kits that include a comprehensive dvd detailing how to design, create and install your bed. Both tend to be the more inexpensive suppliers, with twin, full and queen hardware kits in the $300 range. These kits include the state-of-the-art piston lift system. Reviews for both of these suppliers, and their instruction dvds, are very good.

There are other suppliers who offer Murphy Bed hardware with varying upgrades.

One supplier, for example, offers your choice of aluminum, supreme steel or standard steel hardware, at prices ranging from $640 to $1010 for hardware alone. You can also get just the bed legs and spring hinges alone from this supplier for $400.

Of course, after you buy your hardware, you still need to design and make your bed. There are many designs available on the internet, and eBay also has plans for sale. Possible configurations include an end-drop bed (also called "vertical," where the foot of the bed folds down into the room) or side-mount beds (called "horizontal," where the bed folds down sideways).

Many bed designs can be custom tailored to your specific needs, with bookcases, desks and even sofas built right into the design.
