The secret here is to perform the exercises properly. And doing such thing will definitely force your body to build muscle tissues. There are barbell exercises available. However it's not advisable as it will cause you not to build muscles but to injury instead.

Doing pull ups and pull downs can definitely increase the width of your upper back. If you think this type of exercise can only be done at home, you're definitely wrong. It's because you can still perform pull ups and pull downs even at home. You can use steel bars or wall braces as places where you can hang on. As a newbie, you can perform 20 reps.
Triceps extension
As for triceps, this is the perfect exercise. This can be done by holding weights in your hands. There are several types of triceps exercises - standing, lying and seated dumbbell extensions.
Squats
Squats are popular exercises for muscle building. This is done to increase the sizes of hamstrings, quadriceps and lower back. All you need to perform this exercise is to place your feet within the shoulder width.
Apart from the exercises mentioned above, considering your diet is also important when doing workouts. You should include carbo and protein rich foods in your regular meal. And above all, you should take at least 7 hour of sleep to bring back the energy you've lost after the intense workouts.
