Our bodies build muscle when we injure the muscle tissues that we have. Through a process called hypertrophy, the enlargement of existing muscle tissue, our bodies are able to heal themselves and end up with stronger, larger muscles than we had before. A muscle gaining workout is a workout that promotes this hypertrophy through muscle injury.

The type of exercise that is usually done in a muscle gaining event is almost always weight bearing activity, also known as resistance training. Through a resistance training workout our bodies are able to tear the muscle fibers and with proper rest repair those fibers.


A muscle building exercise involving resistance training can be done either by the natural weight of the body or added resistance. Body weight exercises like pushups, sit-ups, lunges, squats and pull-ups can be done as part of a muscle gaining workout. Added resistance workouts can be done with free weights or machine weights. One advantage that these added resistance workouts have is that the total amount of weight can be higher promoting greater muscle gains, through greater muscle tears.

No matter what muscle gaining workout is chosen it is important to choose a diet that will also promote muscle gains. By ingesting a higher amount of protein, our bodies will have the essential amino acids that are required to build new muscle. A typical diet to coincide with a muscle gaining workout would be about 1.4 grams of proteins for each pound that the person weighs.
