discovered he made with the telescope. The palace stands on the site of the ancient castle of Altafronte, dating from the late eleventh century, which was the fortress that protected the Arno river port and part of the circle of ancient walls of Florence.

The palace was covered by a heavy restoration in the early nineteenth century and for a time housed the collection of manuscripts from the National Library, until the '20s of the twentieth century. Among prestigious institutions that have taken place in the building we cannot forget the Academy of Crusca and Deputation of Homeland History in Tuscany. In 1839 it was restored by the architect Francesco Leoni. The museum was opened in 1930 and collects valuable scientific instruments in part from the Medicee collections, once exhibited at the Museum of the Observatory near Palazzo Pitti, in part from the collections Arcispedale of Santa Maria Nuova, in part through acquisitions and other donations. One of the

larger rooms contain a collection of old globes and spheres, with a magnificent armillary sphere in carved and gilded wood used for complex astronomical calculations, made by Antonio Santucci between 1588 and 1593.
