The Branches of Academic Knowledge

Academic discipline is the field of theoretical and practical knowledge which is studied at colleges and universities. There are various branches of academic disciplines. They are Humanities, Fine Arts (this branch is usually considered to be the part of Humanities), Social Science, Sciences, and Mathematics.

Humanities as the Branch of Academic Knowledge

Such academic disciplines as Humanities investigate the state of a human being. These disciplines have their methods, objects, subjects, and approaches. The subject for all Humanities is always a human being. Objects depend on the concrete sphere of human activity. The main methods of investigation are analytic, speculative, and critical. Consequently, the approach of exploration is empirical.

Humanities include such academic disciplines as Linguistics, History, Literature, Religion, Philosophy, Performing arts, and etc.

Music as a Humanitarian Academic Discipline

Music is part of Performing Arts. This academic discipline can be subdivided into several groups: music education, musicology, music performance, music theory, and composition.

Music Education

Music education as the branch of Music studies the principles, methods and ways of teaching music skills. The task of music teachers depends on the sphere of Music knowledge. If it is the sphere of musical instruments a teacher is to transfer to a child the knowledge about the way how to play this or that musical instrument. The most difficult part of this process is the training in Solfeggio. Solfeggio is the musical grammar. It is even more complicated than some world languages.

Musicology

Musicology is traditionally subdivided into such disciplines as Historical Musicology, Systematic Musicology, Comparative Musicology, and Ethnomusicology. Each of them has its own objects, methods of study, and approaches.

Music Theory

Music Theory studies different mechanisms of music creation and Solfeggio. It deals with fundamental elements of music: structure, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, and form.
