Musicians and poets should use their respective talents to their advantages, and not let broad cultural trends dictate which art form is the best way to express their love. However, there are some general things to keep in mind when using music or poetry while dating.

Poetry is a very niche artistic medium, whereas music is a very mainstream interest. While many people choose both poetry and music as hobbies, music is the huge industry. People are more likely to have a favourite band or music style than a favourite poet. Few people say they dislike music altogether, whereas some people do dislike poetry period. However, it is easier to write a simple greeting card poem than it is to compose a song. Much as people love gifts that others have made especially for them, they tend to love poems written especially for them, often regardless of objective quality. Playing someone elses music may be better than reading someone elses poetry, but reading your own poetry is sure to have a positive emotional effect on most people you are dating.

Talented singers and instrumentalists can personalize other peoples music simply by performing it themselves. Singing for your partner is very romantic, especially if you are a talented musician. Canned music lacks a personal touch, despite its convenience and availability to everyone. However, remembering your partners favourite song or favourite poet is often seen as a very romantic gesture itself. In that case, it has less to do with the poetry and music itself, and more with your consideration for your partner. Recognizing your partners interests and sharing each others interests is of utmost importance in relationships.

Music and poetry may also serve different functions on a date. Poetry is something you recite, which commands the attention of an audience. Music is something that can be played in the background while you and your partner are doing something else. Music is a good way to establish mood during a date, and people can do other things while listening to music. Poetry does not fade into the background so easily. However, poetry can create a more powerful impression than music in some cases, because it requires so much attention. It all depends on the mood you want to set for the date in question, and what your partner likes. With words though you can mix them both and write out a favourite lyric of your song in a love note and put it on a pillow with a flower, very romantic.
