Mussoorie, The Queen Of Hill Stations

Mussoorie, the former British hill station also known as the "Queen of hill stations'

, is perched on a ridge 2 km high and spends much of the year wrapped in clouds. When the mist clears, views of the green Doon Valley and the distant white-capped Himalayan peaks form a spectacular view. The cooler temperatures and the fresh mountain air in the hot months make a welcome break from the plains below.

Although Mussoorie's main part of town looks down on the plains, but the northern side of its hill has wonderful views of the Himalayas. Founded in 1823 by a British Army captain, Mussoorie has a few remnants of the British raj - churches, an old British library, the "Gun Hill," from which the noon cannon was fired, and an old grand hotel. Glimpse the majestic abode of the maharaja of Kapurthala's. The best way to discover the town is to take a long walk up the hill to its quieter sections.

Shopaholics can get good bargains on wooden crafts and simplistic, gaudy Garhwali tapestries, Mall emporiums selling artifacts from other states, especially Kashmir and, for some reason, Karnataka.
