The most popular shoes, however, continues to be the Air Jordan, regardless of how many years Michael Jordan has been retired. In 2010, the 25th Air Jordan was released, keeping alive the tradition that started with the first Jordan shoe. A 26th Air Jordan incarnation is expected to release in 2011.
Until the 1984-85 NBA season, Nike basketball shoes were not all that popular amongst professional players. It had a niche, of course, but other brands, such as Converse and adidas, were as or more popular.
The initial Air Jordan shoe transformed an industry. The shoe was available in several color schemes. One model in particular, primarily black and red with very little white, caused the NBA to levy fines at Jordan for each time he wore them.
There was further revolution when Air Jordan II was released the next year because, until then, the fact of shoes evolving from year to year, like cars do, had not been the norm. A second Air Jordan model was revolutionary enough; that it came out the year following the first model was amazing. It is the norm now, of course.
Of course, there are other well-known models with no player affiliation, as well. Two popular models are the HyperDunk and the HyperFuse series. The HyperDunk is known for its light weight, coming in at under 12 ounces. The HyperFuse shoe is made of composites, making it light as well as strong.
