Peru is filled with a great variety of places to see and activities to enjoy
. The problem is that most of us just don't have the time to fit it all in. The key is to pinpoint what you want to do on trips to Peru through research so you can create a list and a schedule. It's always going to be an adventure when you take Peru travel packages but how difficult or full-on it is going to be lies in your hands. Bear in mind as you are planning your itinerary to give yourself a little bit of extra time to make your international flights so that you don't run the risk of missing them.
Peru
Certainly, the most important place to visit in Peru is Machu Picchu. This world wonder is the perfect place to really get a feel for the Inca civilization as well as their great architectural achievements. To get here you can either trek or go by train. The train will take about four hours from Cusco, including travel to the train station. If you are booking in advance, you can go on a 4-day or 2-day Inca Trail Trek. The two day version is a nice alternative as it doesn't require a great level of fitness. You head through Cusco to get to Machu Picchu and there are a number of stunning archaeological places in and around here, with the Sacred Valley particularly popular.
Another of the key destinations in Peru is Lake Titicaca. From Cusco, you can choose to either take a bus to Puno, the jumping off point for the lake, or fly to Juliaca, the airport that services Puno. Alternatively, you can go by PeruRail's Andean Explorer for a truly luxurious journey. After spending the night in Puno, you will take a boat journey out onto Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. You can choose to overnight with a local family or stay in a hostel before heading back to Puno the following afternoon.
When you are ready to leave Puno and Lake Titicaca, you can make your way to Colca Canyon. This is one of the deepest canyons in the world and is a high point of visits to Peru, not just for the beautiful landscape, but also for the chance to see Andean condors flying. These impressive birds have the largest wingspan of any land bird in the Western Hemisphere. To visit Colca, you can arrange a car that will take you between Puno and Arequipa by way of the canyon. On the two day trip, you will spend the night at Chivay look at the Colca Lodge where you can stay right where the hot springs are located.
A site that is uniquely Peruvian is the Nazca Lines. These are geoglyphs in the desert that are so large they can only be seen by taking a flight above them in a small airplane. There are a variety of drawings including birds, animals, plants, shapes and more. If you are taking a trip around the southern circuit of Peru, you can get there by bus from Arequipa after you have gone to the Colca Canyon. From here, you can continue on by bus to Lima. Alternatively, this whole circuit can be done in reverse, starting in Nazca and heading on to Colca Canyon, then Lake Titicaca and finally Cusco and Machu Picchu.
