My 3 Best Fly Fishing Methods for Trout

Learning the fine art of fly fishing can be challenging. Knowing some of the best fly fishing methods for trout will help you catch moretrout and enjoy the sport more. To master some of these techniques you need to pay attention to detail and have patience. You do not need to be a champion caster. But if you can get 25 to 30 feet of line out then you are on your way to success with the various fly fishingmethods for trout angling.

1. Nymph Fishing with a Strike Indicator

Drifting a nymph with a strike indicatorattached toyour leader is an easy and very effective technique for catching trout in many situations. There are many types of strike indicators on the market. Whatever type you choose they should be easy to see, easy to put on and take off from your line and also relatively small so they do not interfere with the cast or the drift. Small ones also work best with the small flies you may be using on many trout streams. Along with indicating when a fish hits, the indicator also controls the depth of the fly so adjust it appropriately. Generally you want the nymph to be traveling down near the bottom where the trout are feeding. For general trout fishing you might want to try a Golden Ribbed Hare's Ear nymph or a Pheasant Tail in size 16. I tend to use beadhead nymphs as they get down better to the fish's feeding zone. Cast upstream or upstream and across. Focus on the indicator as it drifts with the current. Lift up to set the hook on any time the indicator stops, pauses, jerks or gets tugged. You will miss some fish but you will hook plenty! Don't be afraid to cast repeatedly over a good looking area.

2. Streamers and the Wooley Bugger Drift

This is another of the best fly fishing methods for trout as well as for landlocked salmon. A beadheaded Wooley Bugger or many other type of streamer (such as a Muddler Minnow, Grey Ghost, Mickey Finn, Hornberg, etc). Cast the fly upstream and across. Keep your rod tip high to help keep line off the water. this way there is a minimum ofdrag onthe line. Watch the first few feet of the drift as an aggressive fish may hit right away. As the fly drifts downstream give it an occasional quick strip in of the line of about 3 to 6 inches. Do not over do this as the fly should still be mainly carried by the current. Once the line is directly down stream (if that area looks to hold fish) you want to strip it back in slowly in short strips, occasionally letting it drift downstream a few feet. Then recast. Be ready as streamer fishing can produce some BIG trout. There is a reason why most seasoned fly fishermen swear by olive green beadhead Wooley Buggers!

3. Casting a Dry Fly

This is my real favorite fly fishing method for trout fishing. Even if there is no significant hatch going on dry flies can be very effective particularly in the warmer months when the trout are used to feeding on the surface. Unless I am trying to match a specific insect I might go with an Adams, Black Gnat or Royal Wulff in size 14 or 16. Unless the stream is real small I tend to use a relatively long leader of 12 feet with a 5x or 6x tippet. But the real key to success is getting a drag free float. This can be tricky of course depending on the current. Pay attention to mending your line to achieve this kind of float. Be sure to cast well above where you believe the fish to be feeding. You do not want the fly to land right on top of him but rather come naturally floating downstream into his feeding area. Then be ready for a strike. Tight Lines!
