My Academic and Personal Elements

My academic life started way back in 1991 when I went to America to start off my studies. I was only seven years then and being in a new environment was a great challenge to me. It was not so easy adapting to the differences that existed between our way of life and the way of life in the States of America. Being a black student made me feel out of place. I found students staring at me every time I passed by and this always reminded me that I was different. Soon a year was gone and I was advancing in my classes though my performance was adversely affected by the treatment I got from those I was learning with.

After two years of failing, my father wanted to take me out of America and take me home. This, I yearned for though my mother changed everything since she insisted that I had to continue studying in America. Life was not good for me and as I grew, I leant to appreciate myself and I learnt to ignore those who were belittling me. For instance, students would not wish to share a book or a seat and if in any case I happened to have shared a book, they would throw it away.

I give my gratitude to my important role model, my mother who did not want to give up on me. I also came across a book by Ben Carson, and his story motivated me a lot. My look took on a positive line since then. When I was in grade five, my performance began rising the graph and this shocked most of my classmates who thought I would not perform at all. I kept improving in my GPA and when my father heard of my improvement, he decided to take me back home though he promised to take me back to America for my degree course after I was through with my high school studies. It was my turn to insist that I wanted to remain there till I had cleared my studies. Unfortunately for me, my father claimed that he did not have enough money then so I had no choice but to go study at a cheaper school in South Africa, this was 1999.

Having been away for such a long time from Africa was not an easy thing to adapt to the new system of life again. Fortunately enough, the students were very receptive and this gave me an easy time to pick up. The drastic changes in schooling however, affected my performance in school. When I was in form one I remember being the third last in the class and this was a great shock not only to me but to my parents and my classmates who had greater expectations.

I thank my class teacher, Mrs. Odumbe, who came over to encourage me and motivate me by telling me that all was not lost. Remembering the story of Ben Carson made me pick up and work hard. I remember moving to position nine the next term and this was a great encouragement to me. My classmates began fearing me and thought probably I was going to beat them the more. I changed my attitude and began believing in myself. When I was in my second year of high school, there was a professor who came over to talk to us about career choice. It dawned to me that I had not taken into consideration what I wanted to be in life. I attribute my delay in decision to the challenges I had gone through. They devastated my self image to such an extend that I never imagined I would be anything better.

Immediately the career talk was over, I went to talk to the professor. I informed him that I had liked his talk though I was still in the valley of indecisiveness. He helped me a great deal to discover what it is that I liked. It s at that moment that I discovered that I had passion in International relations and that I would do anything to be there. What motivated me to thing in this line was the fact that I wanted to fight for discrimination by all means. I discovered that if I would manage to work with the UN then I would be able to fight against this especially in foreign land. I wanted to preach brotherhood.

When I moved to my third year in high school, I was the star of the school. My performance had gone up tremendously. I remember my teachers advising me to take medicine since my grades would allow that but I was convinced that I had made the right choice to advance in International relations.

The year, 2003 was welcomed with joy and gladness when my forth form results were out. I had gotten distinction and my parents were so happy. My father promised to take me back to America for my degree course the year 2005. The whole of 2004, I spent time taking short courses like computer systems as I waited to go to America.

Time came and I was of to states, I landed into a class of 30 students and I could not understand why. I later on learnt why, the course was so hard that very few people attempted to do. Again, the cut off marks were so high. I was back again to my failing system and I almost got discouraged. I decided to struggle but when things were hard I decided to join the Air Force. Being there, I discovered that my heart was not in the career. Its challenges were even greater than the ones I was facing in my former career. The training itself put me out. I don't like running, and this was one of the daily duties that every trainee had to undergo.

After all these frustrations, I decided to go back to my former career and up to date, that is where I am in Michigan State University. When I went back I discovered that there were several changes in the school. Like change of lecturers and restructuring of the course. I have then purposed to take the course in another Harvard because of ts facilities ad some of my former lecturers are teaching there.. I am convinced that I have to achieve my dream.
