Coimbatore, then years back in the fifties was called the Manchester of the South and the prime business here was cotton and cotton mills. Most of the cotton mills were spaced far and wide and the population of the city was scattered with the work force staying in proximity to their workhouses.

Over the years the engineering industry such as textile machinery manufacturers, foundries, pump and automobile industry made its mark and this growth threw open a lot of job opportunities which drew people into Coimbatore. Resultantly the need for accomodation and dwellings came into demand and this was the genesis of the real estate business in Coimbatore.

Years back the architecture in Coimbatore was confined to mostly small tile houses for the low income group and the middle class, and terrace houses for the upper middle class and bungalows for the rich. The pattern of housing was mostly individual, or a row of houses for rental, and was subjected to the ground floor, and for the better off two floors and apartments then was not in vogue.

With the boom on the industry front, the increased incomes brought in a new trend of living and housing styles. People started to invest in land and housing in and around Coimbatore and the price of land and property escalated. The prime land within the city limits was sold out for fantastic prices and when there were no more building plots inside the city the attention turned to the suburbs. Empty lands hitherto uncared for assumed importance and builders and property developers started with acquisition of large tracts of land, and the real estate business boom brought in hectic activity.

The construction industry has come to stay in Coimbatore with a lot of players jumping into the fray in the building industry. With the limited space avalable in the city limits, high rise apartments started up and today the city has a lot of flats and apartments dotting the cityscape. Simultaneously, the suburbs around Coimbatore have a lot of satellite townships where constuction activities have assumed mammoth proportions.

Individual houses, apartments small and large, designer homes have come into being, and the new concept of gated community has lately put in its presence. A lot of engineering and technology have gone into the construction industry with aesthetics and vasthu, along with environmental friendly features, and large community housings include various other amenities, like club houses, parks, gyms, swimming pool, golf courses and children's play pen, etc.

The homes are again sophisticate with a lot of gadgets, which pamper the senses of the occupant. There are standard fares and tailor made homes to suit individual tastes, all for an additional fee, which includes the choice of locations too. Meticulous use of glass, marble and tiles has found space in recent construction trends along with modular kitchen, and wash rooms have become glamour rooms.
