A long while later, another bus finally came rumbling along and I and the remaining Afghan passengers caught it. The next day, the Frenchwoman's friend thanked me in my hotel. She and the Swiss couple contacted the French Embassy in Kabul which the Frenchwoman immediately was lead to a hospital to undergo an urgent appendectomy. The close call chastened the companion but she was fine.
