My Most Shocking And Unforgettable Experience

For years of traveling, I have experienced the most shocking medical attack while

I was in Afghanistan when a young Frenchwoman suddenly had an appendicitis attack. She was in terrible agony while unfortunately, the bus that she was on got stranded in the middle of an empty desert. In instances like these, there is no proper medical care available in the area but still, the number of Americans who love to visit remote places in the world still increase.

When the bus full of Afghans drove a couple of hours out of Kandahar, its engine suddenly broke down in the middle of nowhere. The westerner who suddenly approached me was definitely the friend of the Frenchwoman and was puzzled and worried. A terrible pain attacked the Frenchwoman who stretched out in the back seat. What they did was to somehow make the woman feel better was to place a wet handkerchief on her forehead.

An hour passed, and maybe another, and a few passengers hitched rides on one of the rare passing trucks but none was going anywhere near Kabul. Luckily, I was able to stop a European sedan when the Frenchwoman was sobbing in pain. A young Swiss couple was inside who immediately agreed to take the two French travelers to Kabul. A long while later, another bus finally came rumbling along and I and the remaining Afghan passengers caught it. The next day, the Frenchwoman's friend thanked me in my hotel. She and the Swiss couple contacted the French Embassy in Kabul which the Frenchwoman immediately was lead to a hospital to undergo an urgent appendectomy. The close call chastened the companion but she was fine.

In 60 foreign countries, the Maryland based association for safe international road travel can provide travelers with hazardous road conditions. The report may cite the perils of night driving, the probability of livestock on the road, accident prone roads and bizarre driving practices depending on the country. The lack of safety standards makes bus or car rentals risky where it is relevant.

A 25 year old Bethesda medical student killed in a bus accident in Turkey was the reason for the formation of the association. The non-profit organization cites Egypt, Kenya, South Korea, Turkey and Morocco as the countries with the most dangerous roads based on accident statistics. India does not provide statistics but might be on the list. Under the association's prompting, the US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs has begun adding road hazard information to the consular information sheets it prepares for each country. Think of buying a medical evacuation policy and carry adequate health insurance. The US Embassy can help you look for a medical care if you become sick or if you are injured but you are responsible for the payments. Evacuating you by air from a remote area to an emergency hospital can cost thousands of dollars. As a proof of your insurance, before travelling, you should first find out what medical services your health insurance offers and you should also carry an insurance policy identity card and a claim form according to the State Department.

A Medicare supplement plan is provided by the American Association of Retired Persons but this plan cannot be given by the Social Security Medicare if a senior citizen's treatment is done outside the country. Some firms offer insurances which can be purchased on per trip or annual basis such as medical evacuation insurance. Insurance is sold directly by the company and is also sold by the travel agents.

Call the nearest US Embassy if worst happens. A list of other medical facilities or local doctors will be provided by the embassy at the very least. The embassy personnel will still take steps to assure that Americans get the best medical care. Particularly in remote areas that American visitors go to, this is true. It is the officer's duty to ensure that the victim receives adequate treatment, that the victim injured be transported to a better facility, and that the victim's family and friends be contacted in a foreign hospital.
