My PC Has No Sound
Your computer not having sound is a sign that it's either got a series of problems with its "hardware", or has some sort of problem with the software settings that it requires to run. Although we've found that there several different problems that can lead the sound to not work, this tutorial is going to address 2 particular problems that will be leading this common issue to occur.
Why Will The Sound Be Disabled On Windows?
The typical causes of this problem include:
Yourhardware is not running properly
Windows has some sort ofproblem with its software settings
The bottom line with this problem is that your computer will not be able to process the various important settings that it requires to operate the complicated task of playing audio back through your speakers. To fix this problem, you first need to make sure that Windows has its software working correctly, and then that the drivers your PC will be using are working correctly as well.
How To Fix Problems With The Windows Sound Features
Step 1 - Re-Install Any Software Causing The Problem
The first step is to re-install any of the software that could be causing the problem. Many people will note that specific programs - mainly games - will not run with their sound. This is generally the result of these programs having some sort of problem with the specific settings and options that they require to operate, leading your system to run much slower and with a lot of problems as a result. To repair this problem, you should look to perform the following steps for any software that could be causing preventing the sound from running:
Click "Start"
Locate "Control Panel"
Click "Uninstall A Program"
Locate The Application Causing The Error
Remove The Program
Restart Your PC
Re-Install The Software At Fault
This should clean out any of the potentially damaged software settings that will be preventing the sound from playing. This should ensure that your computer is able to process the various settings that it requires to operate in the best possible way. Although this will typically work for the likes of games & other advanced programs, the fact is that most Windows computers' sound issues will not be resolved by this step.
Step 2 - Make Sure The Volume & Audio Settings Are Correct
The next step is to ensure that the volume & audio settings of your PC are correct. This can be done by first clicking onto "Start" and then selecting "Control Panel". In here, pick "Sound" and then look to change the audio settings that Windows may have inside. This will generally show you that either the speakers / headphones are working correctly, or are unrecognized. If they are unrecognized, then you need to use the next step to ensure they have the correct "drivers" installed.
Step 3 - Install The Latest Drivers
The next step is to install the drivers required to run the audio-based hardware. The drivers of your computer are small software applications that have been created to help process the various hardware components that you will have inside your computer. If you cannot hear the sound, it generally means that Windows will be unable to correctly read the files that it requires to run, and therefore have some sort of problem preventing the driver from either working, or being installed.
You should perform these steps to resolve any driver errors / inconsistencies:
Click "Start"
When "Computer" appears, right-click it and then select "Properties"
Inside properties, click on "Device Manager"
Here, a list of the installed hardware on your PC will show.
Select the component with a yellow question mark by its name
Right-click the listing, and select "Properties"
Select "Update Driver"
Restart Your PC
This will basically ensure that your computer does not have any issues with the driver... but is also highly advanced. In order to resolve this problem, it's recommended that you use a "Driver Update" program to scan through your PC and update the drivers of your system to the latest versions. This, for most people, will resolve the no sound problem on their system.
