My Perspective on the Rationality of Watch Price

Generally speaking, the price of a watch consists of three factors: the cost of materials

such as optical material, watch glass, and dial plate; manufacturing and craftsmanship; value of brand. Therefore, prices of watches are set at different levels. And these three factors I give foregoing could explain the rationality in the price-setting of different watches.

First, regarding the material of a watch, those watches made of heavy metals such as gold or those have diamond decorated on them is, needless to say, much more expensive than the others. And second, not all watches are made with same level of craftsmanship and skills. Some are more crude-made than others. As we all know, the Swiss has been leading the world in manufacturing watches. It is just because there are more sophisticated in manufacturing skills and watches made by them are more precise. Therefore, producer with better skills will naturally price its products higher than others. And the last factor that has impact on price-setting of a watch is value of brand. There are many time-honored watch producers who enjoy good reputation and sophisticated manufacturing skills. Comparing to other watch producers, consumers naturally put more credit on them despite of a relatively high price.

Besides, as to watches, I think it can be divided into two categories: one is for pragmatic purpose. That is to say, the main function of it is for timing. And the other category is watches as luxurious goods. In this occasion, a watch is more used as a symbol of status or display of personal charm rather than a timepiece.

The category also has a bearing on the price-setting of a watch. Watches stress on preciseness are usually favored by businessmen or used in certain activities such as racing. A typical brand of such watches is Seiko, a Japanese watch brand. Watches of this category are lower in price. As to the second category, the price is much higher. Such watches is often regarded as the symbol of status and the higher the price is, the loftier the status of the person seems. That is the season why celebrities often take a fancy in famous watches such as Patek Philippe, Constantin, and Cartier and so on.

In conclusion, prices of different watches are decided according to various factors and there is always rationality in it when these factors are considered.
