My birth plan template - one less thing you have to think about

When I became pregnant I was very unsure of what to put in my birth plan, I wanted something simple but would get all my needs and worries met when I arrived in labour at the hospital. I read a lot of books and internet sites and I eventually came up with this plan that I felt helped me alot and I hope it can help some of you.

Birth partners to be

Primary Contact;

Secondary Contact (only if Primary contact is not available);

Induction

I would prefer not to be induced unless its for medical reasons only .

Labour

I want to be able to move around as much as possible and be out of bed.

I would like my birth partner to be with me at all times and not to leave me.

I would like to be able to take a bath.

I would like to drink fluids throughout the first stages of labour, and if possible eat light snacks.

I would like to keep the number of vaginal examinations to a minimum.

Forceps and vacuum extractor

Only to be used in an emergency (i.e. the baby's health is at risk)

Monitoring

I wish to have fetal monitoring throughout the labour.

Pain management

I wish to have pain medication available but only give it when its requested or for medical reasons.

I am happy to have all types of pain relief.

Episiotomy

I would rather not have an episiotomy unless its required for the baby's safety or to stop severe tearing.

Caesarean

If I need an emergency caesarean I wish my partner to be present at all times.

I wish to have an epidural or spinal for the anaesthesia .

If a full ga is needed I wish the baby to be handed to[ insert name here ]after the birth.

Post birth

I would like [insert name here ]to cut the umbilical cord .

I would like my baby given to me as soon as we know everything is ok with him.

I would like [insert name here] to be able to take pictures of the baby.

I plan to breastfeed my baby and would like to be able to as soon as possible .

I would like to go home as soon as possible after the birth.
