My car is having problems

My car is having problems

I am asked frequently to share my opinions and insights from my 30 years of experiences with cars and their problems. The majority of people want to know about 'hot deals' in buying a car, truck or van. Another area of constant interest is the 'What is wrong iwth my car?' or 'can you get it fixed cheaper?' type of question. I naturally have contacts for parts, services and repairs as part of my daily work. I do assist people many times with their concerns. But I am constantly amazed at how often a person requesting help does little or nothing to prevent major breakdowns or serious safety risks. Neglect and inattention plague most cars on the road (after they are ot of warranty).

Which of the following do you think actually occurred:

1) Car owner spent zero on brakes, but wore out several pair of shoes while dragging a foot to slow his car. (left shoe only)

2) Owner knew his car was low on engine oil, but didn't want to waste time filling the crankcase even when the engine began to clatter louder than the sounds from the radio. Instead, owner drove car to and from the beach, until the engine threw a connecting rod through the engine block.

3) Salesman complained that his $1200 car was defective because it wasn't getting good mileage (6 months after his purchase), when it was discovered that he had driven over 60,000 miles without any maintenace at all.

4) Mature driver notices both warning lights and a warning gauge indicating a dangerous overheating of his vehicle's engine, but continues to drive home because it's only 30 miles further, resulting in major failure requiring a new engine.

5)Young driver spends $70/week replacing oil instead of $30 repairing the oil leak.

All of the above are true accounts of neglect which cost the vehicle owners many hundreds of dollars which might have been prevented. All of the above were quick to blame their expenses on their vehicle.

Is synthetic oil worth its cost?

How often must I change my oil?

Its still running ok, why change spark plugs?

I looked at the air fiilter, I knocked off some of the dirt. I can wait to change the filter.

I changed the oil, can I change the filter next time or the time after that?

Its been making noises for the last few months, but it still runs. I can get it repaired in the Spring, can't I ?

The battery doesn't need anything, I just bought it a couple of years ago.

Does the transmission really need servicing? It shifts just fine.

No, the radiator is fine, I put water in it every few days. That's OK isn't it?

The tires don't have to be checked, they aren't flat, right?

Vehicle sellers, parts sellers, the banks and mechanics have something to say about these questions and attitudes. WE say "Thank You " for the extra business.
