Mystery Feelings: Could This Be Menopause?
The most talked about signs and symptoms of menopause are hot and cold flashes, night sweats and mood swings; but what about the mystery feelings that plaque some menopausal women that are seldom heard about? When these strange feelings are experienced, the menopausal woman often fears something is wrong with her and might be too afraid to share how she feels with anyone. Learning about these mystery feelings can allay her fears and help her live with confidence and acceptance.
I had my first personal encounter with menopause when I was in my 40's. One summer afternoon, I arrived at work for my usual 4:00pm to 12:00midnight tour of duty as a Registered nurse. A few minutes after entering my unit, I started feeling increasingly cold, and voiced that the air condition thermostat was set too high. Other members of staff on the unit were telling me that they felt fine, and that I might be getting sick. So I fetched my scrub jacket from the locker room and put it on. Within minutes of putting on my jacket, I had to take it off, because I became quite hot and a bit sweaty'. Quietly, I took off my jacket and thought to myself, "Maybe the staff was right, I might be coming down with the flu or something." Menopause was the furthest thing from my mind. These hot and cold episodes continued for a few months before I noticed that my menstruation was becoming scantier and less frequent. It then occurred to me that these were hot and cold flashes and the beginning of my menopause.
The first thoughts that came to me after acknowledging the fact that I was entering menopause was to pray. And I prayed, "Lord, I have heard talks about terrifying hot and cold flashes, crazy mood swings, waking up nights soaking wet from sweats, depression, sexual issues, and even people going crazy. Lord, I know that I have to go through menopause, but Lord, please let these feelings be mild and bearable for me." And I do believe that God answered my prayers. All the signs and symptoms that I had attributed to menopause, I considered regular and mild, compared to those discussed with me by menopausal colleagues at work and at church; until the day when I first experienced a mystery feeling up my left arm.
The mystery feeling in my arm was not painful, neither was it anything I had encountered before. I can only describe this feeling as a "winding-grrrrr-feeling" that felt like an electrical charge running up my arm. It lasted about 30 seconds and was gone. With my first encounter, I thought the feelings were vibrations from my cell phone in my pocket, but when I reached for the phone, it was not there. So, I looked around questioningly, to see whether my body had touched some electrical equipment or something, but I hadn't because I was standing alone in the middle of the room.
I had forgotten about this mystery feeling until it recurred months later, twice within one month. Since I had never heard about this electrical-like-charged symptom, I was a bit afraid and embarrassed to mention it to anyone. My thoughts though, were that this mystery feeling could be related to menopause. One day, as I summoned the courage and began to mention this unusual feeling to one of my colleagues who was also going through menopause, we both started laughing, and saying, "Oh, you too?" as each of us had never heard about this strange feeling, and thought that the experience was unique to us.
Since that day, I started thinking and learning about the vast number of women whose fears might be allayed; or whose confidence may be improved by learning about the less known signs and symptoms of menopause; about menopause in general; and about how I might help to make the information available to them. My inquiries lead me to learning that this particular mystery feeling is known as "electric shock" and also to the writing and sharing of my personal story.
Electric shock is not the only mystery feeling associated with menopause. Less common signs and symptoms also include incontinence, body odor changes, panic disorders, burning tongue, itchy skin, and tingling extremities, which make up the 34 signs and symptoms associated with menopause. Further, not all these signs and symptoms will be experienced by every menopausal woman. Moreover some of these conditions might be related to other medical conditions. It is therefore imperative that everyone who experiences any of these signs and symptoms consult with a medical doctor to confirm and follow up a diagnosis.
