Will the N900 shed the ageing image of Symbian and bring Nokia to the next level to match the likes of the iphone?The first thing you notice about the N900 is its size. It's certainly hefty at 110.9 x 59.8 x 18mm, and the weight of 181g means it's not going to win any slimming contests either.

But it's worth pointing out that Nokia hasn't once said that the N900 Nokia

is a phone, a successor to the N97 or anything along those lines - it sees it as super-charged internet tablet with phone capabilities, rather than the other way around.The Nokia N900is one of the latest mobile computers to come from the Finnish mobile device maker. It has the same general shape as Nokia's earlier Internet Tablets: a slider with a large WVGA touchscreen and a landscape-oriented keyboard.

While the N900 has its lineage from previous Internet Tablet models, the addition of a cellular radio and the cohesion of the user interface makes this feel more of an entirely new device that's bound to gain some new fans, but also disenfranchise some older ones.

share the shame characteristics, but the latter has a sapphire as the D-Pad controller. This adds an extra 200$ to the Nokia 8800 Arte price.

Although the only substantiating difference is the sapphire crystal, Nokia 8800 Arte has a black casing and the Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte is dressed in brown. The casings are covered with manually crafted Indian goat leather.

is a decent size and has a fairly robust feel to it. Is looks at first like quite a long phone but it's not - it's just narrower than you would expect

The front of the phone has a nice glossy finish to it and the back has a matt finish. I'm not sure if the matt finish is a good or bad thing. On one hand, it stops any finger marks (because you'll see enough of these on the screen!), but then on the other hand it sort of makes the phone look a bit cheaper

The screen is a 3.2" touch screen with a resolution of 360x640 pixels. Matt pointed out in his unboxing video that this resolution is out of the ordinary compared to other handsets as this is wide screen. I would agree - definitely out of the ordinary. In fact, I found this screen really strange! In portrait mode it seems very narrow and takes some getting used to. It also has a very glossy finish to it. Although this looks nice, the glossy surface reflects light quite badly so makes seeing the display in bright sunlight very difficult.

Compared to any previous touch screen phones from Nokia, they have finally produced a touch screen which is capacitive rather than resistive. Definitely a positive step for them as the the screen is so much more responsive compared to the likes of the 5800. (if you are unsure of what this means, the general idea is that resistive screens need a bit of pressure to work where as capacitive ones don't.)
