NDT Methods and their usefulness

The usage of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods have significantly increased in the recent years to detect any flaw and maintain the functionality of machinery involved in industrial processes. Non Destructive Testing is now considered an essential part of engineering disciplines as well as various industries to keep a check on machinery, parts and other equipments to avoid any accident that may occur if any fault or shortcoming goes unreported.

It is understood that different types of machines of highly complex nature are used nowadays to increase the efficiency or output. In order to keep an eye on operational conditions and to find if there is need for any repair or correction as machines are made of varied materials or components, Non Destructive Testing is applied. There are several NDT methods that perform specific functions based on some scientific principle. Depending upon the nature of material, it is decided as to which NDT method to use.

Usefulness of Non Destructive Testing

Non Destructive Testing is used in almost all industries to perform the following functions:

Detection of Flaws in materials, components or system

Determine flaw location

Detect Leaks or breakage

Welding Inspection

Evaluate operational characteristics of materials

Apart from these, the biggest advantage of NDT is that it doesn't destroy the material, object or particle being tested therefore proving to be cost effective. This makes it favored over Destructive Testing methods.

Common Methods of Non Destructive Testing:

Eddy Current- This method is used to detect flaws in conductive materials by creating a magnetic field around the material to be tested. Any variation in the magnetic field is measured which indicates the defect. However this method can only inspect surface defects in conductive objects.

Ultrasonic Testing- It is a highly efficient technique to detect defects or changes in materials' properties through the use high frequency sound waves. The method is preferably used to track flaws in metallic and non-metallic materials and in thickness testing.

Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) It makes use of electromagnetic radiation to spot cracks, voids and changes in materials. It does so by providing images and information about the sub-surface.

Industrial Radiography- IR is an efficient testing method that brings forth hidden defects by using the X-rays that penetrates deep into the tested material to find imperfections.

Accompanying all these methods is Visual Inspection in which defects are identified by examining the materials, objects or visible surfaces by naked eye or using certain equipments. There are several other NDT methods also which are used as per the need.

ABC Testing Incorporated provides its testing services and conducts Non Destructive and Destructive Testing on behalf of business organizations to ensure that their operations run smoothly.
