NFL Week 3: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The good. The Dallas Cowboys, beating the Houston Texans. Most footballexperts were
expecting theTexans to destroy the Cowboys, and basically put a stake in their seasonafter week three. TheCowboys withTexas sizedpressure on their shoulders, played their best game of the season. The Cowboys easilybeat theTexans with aconsistent running game, solid line play, (Romonevergot sacked) and big plays by from an unexpected source, (Roy Williams). Their defense lead by Demarcus Ware with three sacks, andeven forced their first turnovers of the seasonwith two picks and afumble recovery. Also field goal kicker David Buehler made two longkicks to help earn trust from his teammatesand probably savedhis job for at least the next couple of weeks. The Cowboysneedto consolidate thiswin by beatingTennessee in a couple of weeks, otherwise this win by considereda fluke, and the vultures will be circling the nest once again.
The good. MichealVic. Anothergood performance by aquarterback whohas known for being exciting, but wildly inconsistent. He showed great poise, almost freakish arm strength, by throwing accuratelaser beams with a flick of thewrist, all over the field.Vic looksnothing all like the quarterback who was with the Atlanta Falcons. I don't agreewhatVic did with the dog fighting, but serving time hasobviously helped him. When Andy Reid named him the starter last week, he was practically gushingoverthe Vic like afather gushes over a newborn. Kevin Kolb will never, eversee the field againunless it's mop up duty or Vic gets hurt. A lotof experts are down playingVic's performance saying it was only against the Detroit and Jacksonville. I don't buy that. Thosetypes of teams he use to struggle with becausetookthem lightly. Here's the scary part, Vic isonly getting better and he has almost singlehandedly madetheEagles a strong contender in the NFC EAST.
Thebad. The San Franciso 49ers. Everyone's trendy pick to win the NFC west(including myself). Losing to Saints at homeonlast second field is one thing.Getting dismantled by two teams, Seattle and Kansas City is another, who before this season were considered lowerechelon teams. The 49ers have talented players all over the roster. They have arguably the best line backer in the league in Patrick Willis. They have beenanemic of offense, (outside of the Saint game) and firing the their offensive coordinater (Jimmy Raye)is not goingto help. The have given up big plays ondefense and their special teamshave been horrible. Singletary looks likehe is about toblow. I'm surprised Singletary hasn't gone Dikta on the sideline and grabbed a player by the face mask, riped it off, and punched him in the face. The saving grace for the 49ers is that they play in the worst division in the league, and still have a shot to win it. They better orelse Singletary is going to be the fall guy.
The ugly. The CarolinaPanthers. I knew coming in to thisseason they may struggle with two young quarterbacks, who don't look old enough to shave, but they both look awful. Both quarterbacks have fumbled the ball, thrown interceptions. I guessit wasn't all Jake Delommes fault after all. Thedefense has given up big plays and not forced turnovers. I know it's onlySeptember, but Carolina needs to start rebuilding, thisseason isonly going to get worse. I'm not saying 0-16 is in their future, but they have a chance to at leastcontend for it. Losing every week like this can't be sitting wellwith wide receiver Steve Smith who has been knownto speak hismind. A creditto him for not going public with histhoughts. If management has aheart, they should trade him to a contender, to thank him for all his years of him being to franchiseplayer and in the processacquire a draft pickor picks, to help later on down the road. This team is in for a long rebuilding process.
