Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort is the first fort that was built by Sawai Raja Jai Singh and along with the Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort it was meant to make Amer completely secure from any kind of foreign aggression. An interesting legend is associated with the construction of this fort. It is said that when the construction of the fort started, the workers were bewildered to find all their previous day work destroyed every morning. A bit of findings revealed that the hill was haunted by the soul of a prince named Nahar and that he did not take nicely the intrusion of others in his abode. Raja Jai Singh, to placate the irate prince. A small fort was built to provide the soul a resting place. A shrine was also built and dedicated to the prince. Last but not the least, the fort was named after this prince.

Madhavendra Bhawan, or the Zenana (female) quarters is the most impressive in the Nahargarh Fort. Each of these quarters brilliantly highlight the Rajputana art and their taste for luxurious life. The nine wives of the king each got separate quarter that was two stories high. The queens quarter occupied the three sides of the rectangular courtyard while the fourth side had the king's apartment.

Nahargarh Biological park is another attraction that is situated within the premises of the fort. The park spreads over an area of 7.2 sq km and houses animal species like Tiger, Leopard, Asiatic Lion, Sloth Bear, Caracal, Deer, Gharial, Crocodile, Pangolin Jackal, Wild Dog, Wolf, Hyena, Jungle Civet and Fishing Cats, Ratel, Common and Desert Fox, Wild Boar, Rhesus Monkey and Langur. A wide variety of bird species is also found in the park. The fort, infact was used by the king as a hunting retreat. It was also used by the queens as a retreat palace.

Even today, owing to the fact that the fort is not visited by a large number of people when compared to other forts of Rajasthan, it serves as a perfect spot for those looking for tranquility and a quiet holiday.
