Namuang Waterfall And Its Purple Rocks A Scenic Escape In Koh Samui

Nestled among lush green vegetation and sheltered against the hot sun by the thick canopy overhead, the Na Muang Waterfalls in Koh Samui cascade down beautiful rock formations and is one of the most picturesque locations of Thailand. Though there are a number of other waterfalls, the Na Muang falls are considered the most scenic and located just off the main road south of Lamai to Nathon, is easily accessible.
Na Muang which translates to the colour purple, most likely refers to the striking purple shade on the rock formation that create a stairway to make way for the water. Na Muang 1 can be reached by vehicle and gushes down to form a natural pool at its feet which is ideal for swimming in. The water is always icy cold and a welcoming escape after a hot and sweaty trek up the steep and rocky hills leading up to the waterfalls, for those adventurous enough to walk rather than drive. Further north is Na Muang 2, considered the most beautiful of the waterfalls in Thailand it can only be reached by foot or elephant. A short 30 minute trek will be rewarded by one of Thailand's most panoramic views of the forest cover around and the cascading water of the purple waterfalls. It is advised to visit during the wet months of September through November when the falls can be seen in all their glory.
Between the two falls is the Na Muang Safari Park where one can take an elephant ride or watch a monkey performance, which kids are sure to love it! Access to the falls is free but there are enough wayside stalls selling souvenirs and guides to make you spend some money as well. There are stalls selling scrumptious authentic Thai cuisines at very attractive prices and too.
Take a vehicle recommended by your Samui hotel so as to not take an overpriced taxi ride to the falls and choosing a package that includes a visit to the site is also advisable.
