National Humiliation For India Looms
The opening ceremony for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi
, are scheduled to take place in only eleven days from today.
The build up to the games has been plagued by problems, both natural with man-made with heavy monsoon rains causing flooding, and engineering problems with bridge collapse taking place yesterday and ceiling collapse today.
Security issues are now a chief concern of organisers and the national athletics teams taking part, with shooting of tourists and an amateur car bomb attempt carried out in the last two days.
Athletes and the international committees accompanying the sportsman to the event, are now expressing concern regarding the suitability of the accommodation in the athletes "village', due to the poor standard of hygiene and cleanliness.
British athletes led by Bejing Olympic gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu, Phillips Idowu and Lisa Dobriskey have withdrawn due to safety concerns in the last 24 hours. The British' trio may not be the first to bail out due to concerns over terrorist threats to disrupt the games.
The Indian media have launched fierce criticism of the organising committee due to delays in readying the venue, forcing the Indian Prime Minister to step in and rescue the games, by moving development forward and unblocking' obstacles preventing completion of the facilities and other infrastructure to schedule.
There have been accusations of bribery and corruption being a principle cause of delay, with sub-standard works affecting the construction phase of the project.
The Commonwealth Games is a low-key athletics event compared to the Olympics and World Championships, with only former British colonies taking part in the event. Large-scale withdrawal by athletes or whole international teams will have a serious impact on the future of the games.
Should there be further problems with the venue and infrastructure, low attendance by both athletes and spectators, India can wave goodbye to hosting future major sporting events for the foreseeable future.
The national humiliation of failing to organise and run the games to anywhere near the standard of the recent World Cup hosted by South Africa, will slow down the claim of India to be a developed economy.
Having a plentiful supply of cheap labour is one thing. Having the skill and organisational ability to put together an international event, with large-scale bribery and corruption taking place in the background is another.
