National Orchid Garden – An epitome of nature's exquisite splendour
Experience the splendour of nature's exquisite beauty when visiting the spectacular National Orchid Garden in Singapore
. This magnificent garden features over a 1000 species of orchids and more than 2000 hybrids of these pretty flowers in a picturesque setting. Located within the premises of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the National Orchid Garden is one of the primary attractions of the Botanic Gardens, attracting crowds of locals and tourists on a daily basis. The National Orchid Garden was officially opened to the public in 1995 and since then has grown to be one of Singapore's top attractions renowned for its artistic appeal and scenic beauty.
Covering an area of 3 hectares, the National Orchid Garden lies atop the highest hill of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. One of the most distinctive features of this orchid haven is its colour coordinated design concept that consists of 4 themed areas based on the seasons of the year. The spring section displays shades of cream, yellow and golden orchids, whilst the summer zone is vibrant with vivid hues of red and pink orchids. The autumn section showcases orchids with much deeper hues. The winter section, in keeping with its mellow colours, highlights white and subtle blue orchids. This amazing colour scheme of the garden has been achieved by combining the orchids with various other carefully selected shrubs, plants and trees of similar floral shades.
There are plenty of attractions and exhibits to visit at the National Orchid Garden. An 1886 colonial plantation bungalow, known as the Burkhill Hall, provides visitors with information on the flowers. At the back of the bungalow is the VIP Orchid Garden which showcases hybrids of orchids named after important guests who have visited the garden. Tropical orchids can be seen in the Coolhouse which is a space created to look like a tropical forest in the highlands, whilst the Orchidarium is an orchid lover's dream come true with its wide range of species and tropical setting. Other onsite attractions include the Tan Hoong Siang Misthouse and Lady Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad House which also displays different types of orchids.
