In view of the high prevalence of malnutrition in India, the government has launched nutrition programmes at the national level. Eight major nutrition programmes are being implemented in India at present:
Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS) Supplementary nutrition.
National Nutritional Amaemia Prophylaxis Programme
National Goitre Control Programme
National Programme for Prevention of Nutritional Blindness due to vitamin A' deficiency
Mid-day Meal Programme
Special Nutrition Programme
Applied Nutrition Programme
Chief Minister's Noon Meal Programme
The aim all the nutrition programmes is to provide additional nutrients to target groups to fill the gap between intake and requirement. The main beneficiaries of nutrition programmes are the nutritionally vulnerable preschoolers, school children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, constituting about 40% of the total population.
Government of India has promised to its citizens that all children below years will be weighed every month and a growth chart maintained. Malnourished children will be graded and given supplementary nutrition through ICDS and programmes.Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme is the largest programme for the promotion of the mother and child health and their development the world. The package of services provided by the ICDS scheme supplementary nutrition, immunization, health check-up, referral services, and health education, and pre-school education. The distribution of iron and tablets and megadose of vitamin A is also undertaken, to prevent iron deficiency anaemia and xerophthalmia respectively. The ICDS had led to i) reduction prevalence of severe grades of malnutrition and (ii) better utilization of services national nutritional anaemia prophylaxis programme and the national programme prevention of nutritional blindness due to vitamin A deficiency by ICDS beneficiaries.Just as the damaging effects of malnutrition can pass from generation to generation, so can the benefits of good nutrition. Giving a child a solid nutritional start has an impact for life on her or physical, mental and social development. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, making a child susceptible to disease, increasing severity of illness and impending recovery. A sick child, in turn, can quickly become malnourished. Age appropriate breast feeding and nourishing complementary foods, along with adequate health care, can break this vicious cycle. A child's nutritional future begins before conception with the mother's nutritional status prior to pregnancy. A chronically undernourished mother is likely to give birth to an underweight baby with stunted growth. A well nourished women over the age of 18 has a much greater chance of surviving pregnancy and her child is grow up healthy.
