It's natural to be picky when it comes to marble and granite countertops. After all, they cost a pretty penny and you're going to live with them for the rest of your life. Here are some things to consider when looking at possible natural stone flaws.

Cracks are indeed natural. They can be there from the start, from the quarrying process, transport, or handling. Naturally, some repair would be attempted for these. But still, look at the quality of the repair. Look at the crack from several angles, ask if repair was attempted, and what procedures were used. Color variations on the stone are natural. Just make sure that the colors follow the same vein and are similar to other stones from the same batch. You can compare with other slabs to see get an idea of how veins and colors vary even with the same stone type.

In the end, you have to trust your gut. Since the selection of kitchen countertop depends mostly on your taste and preference in your home, exert your power of choice. You are the customer. If you feel uneasy, better select a different stone. You literally have thousands to choose from, so don't be concerned about lacking options.

Some of the tips here can help, but ultimately, trust your instinct. If you feel you don't like it, don't sign the order. Whatever suppliers and fabricators may tell you, you always have the final say.
