Natural Home Remedies For Diarrhea Treatment And Diarrhea Treatment

Diarrhea is loose, watery stools

Diarrhea is loose, watery stools. A person with diarrhea typically passes stool more than three times a day.

People with diarrhea may pass more than a quart of stool a day. Acute diarrhea is a common problem that usually lasts 1 or 2 days and goes away on its own without special treatment.

Prolonged diarrhea persisting for more than 2 days may be a sign of a more serious problem and poses the risk of dehydration.

Chronic diarrhea may be a feature of a chronic disease.

Diarrhea can cause dehydration, which means the body lacks enough fluid to function properly.

Dehydration is particularly dangerous in children and older people, and it must be treated promptly to avoid serious health problems.

Diarrhea needs to be distinguished from four other conditions. Although these conditions may accompany diarrhea, they often have different causes and different treatments than diarrhea.

Causes of Diarrhea

1.Viruses- Common viruses that cause diarrhea are Norwalk virus, cytomegalovirus, viral hepatitis and the herpes simplex virus. Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute childhood diarrhea. Viral diarrhea spreads easily.

2.Bacteria and parasites.-Contaminated food or water can transmit bacteria and parasites to your body. Parasites such as Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium can cause diarrhea.

3.Lactose- A sugar found in milk and milk products, lactose is a common cause of diarrhea in some people.

4.Fructose- Fructose, a sugar found in many fruits, is a common cause of diarrhea, especially in children.

5.Artificial sweeteners- Sorbitol and mannitol, artificial sweeteners found in chewing gum and other sugar-free products, can cause diarrhea in some otherwise healthy people.

6.Surgery- Some people may experience diarrhea after undergoing abdominal surgery or gallbladder removal surgery.

Symptoms of Diarrhea

The common illness, which may last several days, often called "intestinal flu," is often due to one of a number of viruses that infect the bowel, making it weep fluid. The excess of fluid in the bowel leads to liquid stools.

1.Frequent loose, watery stools

2.Abdominal cramps

3.Abdominal pain

4.Fever

5.Bleeding

6.Lightheadedness or dizziness from dehydration

Treatment of Diarrhea

If the diarrhea is acute, and the cat seems otherwise fit & well, your veterinarian may choose to withhold food for a day or so.

Water is still to be provided. After the fasting period, food may be re-introduced but this will usually need to be bland for a few more days.

1.Treat dehydration & electrolyte imbalance if necessary.

2.Treat parasites.

3.Treat protozoal infections.

4.Antibiotics for bacterial infections.

5.Anti diarrhea medications.

6.Surgery may be required if the cause is an obstruction.

7.More specific treatments will be required for other causes such as hyperthyroidism, cancer, kidney disease etc.
