One of the most exciting events in basketball is right around the corner

. It's almost time for the men's Olympic training camp to open its doors for a plethora of NBA players. Even though the NBA's schedule was shortened this past season due to the ongoing strike between the owners and players, USAB chairman Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski will narrow down the roster to 15 finalists. While all of the finalists will be immensely-talented players in their own ways who have sold millions of jerseys and NBA tickets, Colangelo and Krzyzewski will have to pare the roster down by three when they announce the final 12-man roster on a live TV special. These players are the "best of the best" who will be expected to bring home another gold medal when the Olympic final occurs on Aug. 12 in London.

The players on Team USA will undergo three weeks of intense training, which will certainly help them recover from the lockout-shortened season, forcing them to simulate the equivalent of one game every other day. Training will take place in four cities across three countries, where the team will play five exhibition games against their rivals in the Olympics before the Opening Ceremony begins on July 27.

While Krzyzewski has the luxury of choosing between the best players in the NBA, it's not going to be without its own unique set of challenges. Krzyzewski has to focus and pay attention to the players' respective needs in the early days when camp begins. With the sense of urgency around the competition's training sessions, players like LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant will have to recover faster, since it will be less than three weeks since the NBA Finals wrapped up. Kobe Bryant, who is approaching his 17th season in the NBA, will understand what it takes, but at the same time, he'll want to be sure not to overdo it himself as he has his sights set on winning a 6th NBA Championship himself to tie Michael Jordan's record.

While Team USA gets to spend six days in Las Vegas, it's going to be hard work. They'll be training against a younger team of NBA players who will help the "senior" players prepare for the games in London. At the same time, this will give the younger guys a chance to audition for the 2014 U.S. team. Team USA will have its own roster challenges, as Tyson Chandler will be the only experienced center on the roster, with Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Chris Bosh all unavailable for various reasons.

Team USA's schedule during the preseason will have challenging opponents with the goal of bringing out the best in the American players. The Olympic opening game is right around the corner when the team faces France, ranked highly with NBA players. While some teams might not want to face such a challenge early on, it will be a great test for Team USA to make sure they're fully motivated and ready to win the gold in London.
