Nearest Extrasolar Planet That Can Sustain Life

There are many mysteries in the universe that created life

. The concept of intelligent life on other planet started when science first discovered the stars and other planets from other galaxy. Though intelligent life from other planet is not yet proven but science strongly agreed that they do exist and that these extraterrestrial beings are living somewhere in space, they could be intelligent or not. Today, scientists from different agencies around the world have been transmitting radio signals into space hoping that other civilization might interfere and finally interact with us. Alpha Centauri B, the nearest exoplanet from Earth with, would be the hope to long-before question in the human history?

Alpha Centauri B is an exoplanet found within Proxima Centauri, which contains 3 stars, and also the nearest exoplanet from our solar system with 50 light years away from our planet. Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are just two of the planets orbing one of the 3 stars. Until today, scientists haven't distinguished where both exoplanets orbit. There are no clear information if civilization settled within the two planets have the technology to interpret the 1962 sights and sounds, which travels almost the same speed of light, transmitted by some space agencies. The European space researchers have currently reinvigorating the hope that our solar system has nearby neighbors.

Just on October 17, the group Nature has published information about the discovery of an extrasolar planet that was confirmed to orbit Alpha Centauri B. This extrasolar planet has a distance of 4.3 light years away from our planet. The Nature group is composed of internationally competitive scientists around the globe. According to Co-author Stephane Udry of Observatory of Geneva in Switzerland, the discovery of the erxtrasolar planet is a special case to searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. He announced that the exoplanet Epsilon Eridani B is twice farther than the extrasolar planet Alpha Centauri B b. Debra Fischer of Yale University also delivered her appreciation and told the group that it was a discovery of the decade.

According to the study, the Alpha Centauri B b is presumed to be a rocky world like Earth and has a mass smaller than Earth, about 1.13 times that of our planet. Though the newly found world is far too hot to support life, the study suggests that additional terrestrial planets may exist in more temperate orbits withing the same planetary system. Fischer alluded that Alpha Centauri B b is a good bet but looking for other planets orbiting Alpha Centauri B would be appreciated.

Further examinations and thorough investigation to Alpha Centauri B is currently being conducted because even the best astronomical instruments we possess today cannot convey clearer portraits of the distant planet. The extrasolar planet was discovered through radial velocity method by tracking Doppler shifts in the starlight from Alpha Centauri B. Planets that orbit exert gravitational pulls to their host stars that resulted the star to accelerate towards or away from Earth. The Geneva team used the HARPS spectrograph that unleashed 3.6-meter telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chille. It is also the world's premier instrument when tracking changes in stellar radial velocities.
