Necessary Lawn Maintenance Keeps Your Home Looking Spectacular!

All homeowners love to have a lawn they can boast about

, but it takes work to get it presentable and then more labour is involved in order to keep it that way. Lawn maintenance is not for the faint-of-heart, but it only requires a few hours a week to keep your property among the best looking in the neighbourhood. Timing is important when planning a successful lawn and autumn is the ideal season of the year to plant seed or lay out sod. The ground should be damp but not overly so and waiting until after a good rainfall will most likely work out best.

Tools of the trade make lawn care simple

Smaller lawns can be handled with a few tools. Rakes (bow and leaf), broom, garden fork, and perhaps a fertiliser spreader will make your work easier. A push mower works fine but can be strenuous so choose a gas or electric mower if you can. Larger lawns may benefit from hiring help, or purchasing your own riding lawn mower.

Choose between seed and sod

Sod will give you instant lawn but it is more costly than starting from seed. Grass seed comes in a wide variety of types so check with your garden supplier to find which grows best in your area and climate. You want a green yard but do not want to over spend on watering and fertilisers to get it there. How and by whom your yard is to be used will determine which grass type will work best. If you have children and pets that will be playing in your yard you may wish to select a grass that is hardy and will stand up to some abuse. More ornamental types of grasses will beautify your property but may not have the stamina to hold up under heavy traffic.

Fertilising your lawn gets it off to a good start

There are many organic based lawn fertilisers on the market today and they give your garden area a natural environment in which to thrive. Read the instructions for applying the lawn "food" and do not use too much at one time as it will tend to burn the tender new shoots. Buying sod will generally mean it has been treated but you can give it a boost and help it survive transplant shock by adding some fertiliser after laying your new lawn.

Aerate and spread your seeds

If you can, rent or purchase a lawn seed spreader and an aerator. The new lawn requires some aeration to help the grass seed take root and grow quickly. A spreader will make laying out the seeds far easier than scattering by hand. This type of equipment can usually be rented at the same place you purchased your seed and fertiliser or a garden centre. If you have a garden fork and a smallish yard simply gouge holes in your soil, as many as possible to make the appropriate ventilation for the new lawn.

Watch it grow when springtime comes around

After a small amount of lawn maintenance your successful planting in the fall (around September) will pay off in a rapidly growing, brilliantly green lawn. Now get the mower out and keep it looking fantastic.
