Need For Prescription Sunglasses

We all know that prescription sunglasses have become a fashion accessory

, but they are definitely more than that. Eye doctors recommend wearing prescription sunglasses every day. And there is a simple reason for that: On an average, a person spends more time outdoors which means your eyes are exposed to more ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

Apart from causing sunburn, too much exposure to UV rays can also contribute to a number of serious eye problems that may not become apparent until you are much older.

Just consider the harmful effects of UV rays. In one study of 838 fishermen, researchers concluded that individuals who did not wear sunglasses or brimmed hats had three times as many cataracts as those who did.

UV radiation from sunlight is known to damage the cornea. Sunglasses play a major role in protecting the delicate tissues around the eyes from UV related skin cancer. Another danger from which sunglasses can shield us, is the blue-light, which is a short wavelength visible light. Though having less energy than UV rays, long-term exposure to it can lead to macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is considered to be the most common cause of vision loss in people above the age of 55.

Sunlight and UV rays also have the ability of getting reflected off certain kind of surfaces, which makes it really important to wear sunglasses while boating or at the beach. Water, snow, sand, concrete and glass are also known to reflect sunlight and UV rays, so it will be wise to wear prescription sunglasses as much as possible.

Also, one must remember that prescription sunglasses should be worn, even in winter or on a cloudy day. UV rays can be less intense in winter, but they can be still damaging nevertheless. UV rays can zip right through the clouds, so protective prescription sunglasses are important even on an overcast day.
