Needlepoint Is A Very Popular Hobby
There are similarities between counted thread embroidery and needlepoint
, but the big difference is that needlepoint uses printed patterns on canvas. The canvas is stiff and there are holes spaced evenly so a needle and thread can be placed in the holes.
Tapestry is a term that many people use to refer to needlepoint; this is different than true tapestry, where true tapestry is done on by weaving on a loom. Tapestry or needlepoint is done using a stitch on a canvas mesh.
The term needlepoint is sometimes referred to as the new old type of fashioned craft; this is used to produce clothing that is embellished, fashionable accessories and decorations for the home. To make it easier to follow a pattern these canvases have a design that is printed on them.
Keeping the canvas stretched properly makes it easier to stitch; many people use what is called a scroll frame to do this. New types of thread and yarn are developed everyday and new techniques are being invented each and every day.
The type of person who used needlepoint have been women for many centuries, this type of craft has not been accepted into the fine arts. Many believe this was so because it was only done by women. There are so many different colors of threads and yarns to choose from, by having so many choices it makes it easier to mix and match.
There are many different types of stitches to use in needlepoint, one of these stitches is the simple tent stitch, and this type of stitch relies on the way colors need to change to make a new pattern.
The type of canvas for needlepoint is vast, and there are many on the market today, some of these are rug, plastic, interlock and penelope. For people who needlepoint there are many color choices, these type of canvases are called mono, they are simple woven where the thread goes under and then over.
There are many different canvas patterns, some patterns are machine produced and other types are hand painted. The hand painted canvases are sometimes harder to understand, if the color pattern intersects the person doing the stitching will need to figure out what color is needed. Many of the designs that are hand painted are less intricate due to the limited colors used when creating these canvas prints.
Needlepoint finally took its place when people had increased leisure time and the invention of the colored printing onto canvas, the types of designs are called "Berlin Work".
The more complex and highly detailed needlepoint all depends on what the mesh on the fabric is and the thread count. There are many different types of threads used for needlepoint, cotton, silk, wool and many are combinations or blended threads.
There are many different type of stitches for needlepoint, some are plain where one thread will cross a straight forward design and some are more complex called a "bargello".
For needlepoint, the types of canvas varies, there are single thread, double thread and canvases that have open meshes, these type of canvases have holes which are larger than normal and make it easier for the needle and thread to pass through.
