Negombo is a lovely resort town located along the beautiful western coast of Sri Lanka. The Portuguese managed to gain control of this popular sea port and built a fort around the town and its cinnamon groves. In 1644, the Dutch gained control of the area, further fortifying the city and improving the already built fort. However, the British took over Negombo in 1796 for a period of time. The fort gate, which is now part of a prison, can still be seen in Negombo. A historic Dutch canal that runs for over a 100 kilometers continues to function and can also be explored.

There are several buildings in Negombo, many of which are churches that date back to the period of the Portuguese and Dutch. One such place is the St Mary's church which lies at the heart of the Negombo town. Eco enthusiasts should definitely visit the Muthurajawela Marsh located just off the town's lagoon. This marsh is Sri Lanka's largest one and is a fine example of a unique wetland habitat. Furthermore, the professional art of fishing can be observed from the shores of Negombo's exquisite beaches as each day fishermen put out to sea for fresh catch. A fishermen's festival is held annually in the town towards the latter part of July.
