Years ago the idea of looking out for your neighbors became very popular when people began to notice that crimes in their areas weren't being reported. This was happening because people would witness something going on and then assume that someone else had already reported the crime. The problem arose when the crime never was reported because everyone assumed that someone else was taking care of it, when in fact no one had. After a famous case of a woman in Queens, NY being attacked within earshot of her neighbors and the crime not being reported, people all over the world thought that a better solution had to be out there. This is when the concept of the neighborhood watch was developed. This was the idea that the residents of a certain area would come together and agree to keep watch over their neighborhood and report any suspicious activity or crimes that they witnessed. By organizing a group of people who agreed to this task they guaranteed that there would never be a crime that went unreported because of the assumption that someone else had already reported it.

Your neighborhood doesn't have to organize a specific neighborhood watch in order to keep the neighborhood safer. In fact you can even decide with just a few of your neighbors to keep an eye on each others' properties and even that will do wonders for increase your own home security. So remember, keeping a safe and secure home doesn't have to cost a lot of money. There are plenty of security measures that you can take that are free.
