Netbooks. Something I Like About These And Something I Do Not Enjoy About These
My partner has recently left her job. I am now fortunate enough to be supporting her full time - which is nice. Needless to say, when she left her job, she left behind all of her technical apparatus as well. Obviously, her mobile phone needs replacing - I am still negotiating this purchase with her. I am trying to get her to just accept a second hand iphone 3GS. (I want the iphone 4), but it really is not going well up to this point in time. I'll keep you posted. Now, obviously there is her laptop. Amongst her complaints about her work laptop was its heaviness and size. Having to drag it across the city from meeting to meeting resulted in a miserable evening for me, paying attention to her moaning in regards to the soreness in her back and shoulders. On the worst days, this would mean a tired out half hour for me massaging the affected areas. So, when she asked for a substitute, and knowing that she still travels quite a lot, I recommended a Netbook. An Acer Aspire One. A very attractive piece of kit in white. Let me run through the specifications:Acer Aspire One 531 Perfect for mobile computing10.1" Widescreen (1024x600)Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU160GB Hard DriveMicrosoft Windows 7 Starter1GB DDR2 MemoryBuilt in Wi-FiIntegrated Acer Crystal Eye VGA Webcam3 x USB 2.0, RJ45 10/100, Mic Input, Headphone OutputBuilt in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/gBuilt in SD Card ReaderVGA Outputbattery gives 7 hours mains free operation12 Month WarrantySo, what's good about it?The battery lasts for a very long time:That's tremendous. The battery life goes for days, making this a truly mobile device. So, on a practical sense, you are able to place it inside your handbag (or the wife can) and never worry about taking the power adaptor with you. A huge plus point. The physical size:It's small, portable and you can actually carry it anyplace. My wife puts it in her handbag and takes it out with her daily. And she says she's very pleased with its weight being so light. So I do not have any more moaning.Price:When I bought it around 5 months ago, it was somewhere around 300. Which I thought was fairly realistic. I believe now you can get a similar spec. machine for around 250.What's bad about it?It's underpowered:To be honest, it's quite a struggle running Windows 7 in the netbook. It is not just that it is not fast. It feels underpowered. You cannot use a netbook in the same way as you use a laptop or PC. The main thing you will notice is you will probably have to get much more disciplined. You are not going to get away with opening multiple applications with numerous different browser tabs. It's much more linear. You are likely to have to carry out tasks one at a time. Now, while my wife doesn't really find this much of a problem, there's one thing that really annoys her. It just doesn't seem to have enough resources to run Skype successfully. The camera in the netbook is fairly average anyway, but even when you have closed all the other applications, it sometimes doesn't have enough resources to run Skype. And then you will find ones self playing with the task manager to close down system processes to get it to operate. This really is very aggravating, for the reason that, invariably I can't be bothered. I might be watching Coach Trip or something equally riveting. I have stop watching my program to boot up my laptop and twiddle with it to allow her onto Skype so she will be able to chat with her parents and her sister, who live in Australia. A proper nuisance. The screen:For me, it's just a bit too small. On facebook for example, you will need to scroll up and down to discover the next and previous image tabs. Slightly irritating. It is the vertical size of the screen that's mainly annoying. Titles and headings appear to be slightly below the visible screen therefore you're constantly using the trackpad or keypad to read them. This actually makes surfing the web harder than on the smart phone. The iphone for instance has more vertical space which means you scroll up and down less often. The keyboardLastly, the keyboard. For myself, it's just a little too small. The wife has smaller fingers than I do. And she also said that it took a couple of weeks to get accustomed to it, but now she has no problem. Maybe, I could get used to it after a few weeks too. But my fingers are like paddles and I kept finding that I hit 2 keys rather than one.The shortage of the DVD drive:'It goes without saying, it hasn't got a DVD drive - it's a netbook!' I explained to my missus. But the wife says that she misses it because she likes to watch a DVD when she's in the train, or at least possess the option to watch a DVD. For me this is not a serious drawback. It is easy to obtain the film in a compressed format and stick it onto a flash disk. But, she is not as enthusiastic about technology as I am. You simply cannot please some people. And so the conclusion:Well, for what it is, you can't really have a lot of complaints. It is small and light, and also the power source lasts a good time. The other half seems happy with it overall and that is who I bought it for after all. If it was perfect, she would not have anything to complain about, so we probably would not talk at all.... Personally, I would not pay for a netbook again. I'd probably buy a small laptop. Something which has a minimum of a 12" screen and suitable CPU. I think the netbook is simply too slow and does not multi task very favorably. The screen and keyboard are simply a bit too small. For surfing the net whilst on the go, It is my opinion the iphone is perfectly adequate. Although I would not do serious surfing on the iphone, maybe just to look up things on IMDB for instance, I almost certainly wouldn't wish to do any real surfing on the netbook either. So what is the solution:Employ a huge man to lug around a full size laptop for you or, failing that, surely, it has got to be a serious sized laptop which includes a minimum 12 inch screen and also a smartphone. Covers all bases. This does not cover everything which is involved, but hopefully I have given you an insight toward what is involved. There are a good amount of ebooks and such stuff that you can find around the world wide web. I always go to a company called computer repair london. They don't just repair computers, they also provide IT support as well and they really are always helpfull if you get baffled on anything technical.
