Netscape a Pioneer of the Portal Concept
Some Internet sites would probably prefer it if you didn't hop from one site to another
. The Internet portal would instead be the one site in which you would spend most of your online time. Internet portals make it their primary duty to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Seeking to meet every Internet need you would have, Internet portals can simply be described as Web super sites. The fact that many services offered by the owners of these sites are free makes the sites so tempting. One of these services offered by portals is free e mail accounts. Instant messaging, popular among users, is also offered along with chat rooms and message boards.
The popular search engine tops the list. All of these services are provided to give you a sense that you're doing more than just visiting a Web site. I call this the American express approach to Web sites. Instead of customers or cardholders, the term members became a better title for the people, based from the American express survey. It was because of this that the Membership has its Privileges slogan came about.
The operation of portals is pretty much the same thing. Why is the idea of community such a big deal for these portal sites? It all revolves around the idea of money. Selling advertising space is the way these sites earn money. According to them, your online time will be mostly spent at their site so long as they make you feel more welcome and give you more free services. Advertising space would be given to advertisers at much high cost.
Ads will be available at any part of the portal. Netscape was one of the first to put the portal concept into action. Rather than reinvent the wheel, it has teamed with other noteworthy Internet companies to offer many of its free services. USA.net, through the netcenter, provides the free e mail service. There is a wide array of other services that the netcenter makes available to you, like a personal finance area and an online auto buying area. Internet search engines are popularly used by all Web surfers.
The fact then that popular search engines are doing the same things as portal sites does not make us wonder anymore. Free e mail and searches are available in AltaVista. There is a Web page on the site that allows you to write and translate text into another language. The fact that Yahoo is now sporting portal features adds to its appeal as being more than just a search tool. You can get an e mail account and do online searches for free. A personal yahoo account called my yahoo can be yours as well.
Yahoo pager, the instant messaging software, can be downloaded and is also available in java for the convenience of macintosh and unix users. You can also sign up to have yahoo as your Internet service provider. Grocery shopping can be online through eGrocer. A twist is added to how you do your online shopping thanks to the excite product finder. Just type your need and everything will be presented to you.
The use of the search engine is also given. The same thing could be said for lycos. Portal sites pretty much offer the same as any other, and that is the weakness of lycos. What sets lycos apart from other portal sites is that it offers free home pages.
