Here's a great network marketing tip for you. Stop trying to over analyze the business. A work from home business based on networking is really a very simple business which can make you financially independent relatively fast if you understand a few basic truths.

The truth we'll discuss in today's network marketing tip is that network marketing is "a storyteller's business." How many times have you heard that phrase? Or, "facts tell, stories sell." While we have heard both many times, some of us want "the facts, ma'm; just the facts." Facts are great, however, in our business we have to get someones attention before they will hear the facts and we get their attention with stories.

Why are stories effective? Because we have been conditioned to expect certain "things" from stories. Let me explain. When you read or hear the phrase "Once upon a time . . ." what happens? If you are like most people, you smile, relax and prepare yourself to enjoy the story. You know someone is going to entertain you; not ask you to do something. Because it is going to be a story, you pay more attention to what is being said and consequently remember the story long after you have forgotten the facts.

Here's a network marketing tip within a tip. In the network marketing business or any home business it's important that you catch and hold a person's attention long enough for you to establish that you are someone this person may want get to know better and possibly go into business with.


How do stories help with this process? A brief explanation of how the brain works will help. Your brain is separated into two hemispheres. The left hemisphere is all about logic and structure. The right hemispheres is all about emotion and feelings. In addition to the left and right hemispheres, our brain also consists of the "lizard" brain (fight or flight; see Seth Godin's Linchpin for greater detail) and the limbic brain (experience and enjoy).

In anticipation of hearing a story, the limbic/emotional brain becomes open and receptive, aware that it may be about to have a pleasant experience. It actually relaxes and quiets the left side of the brain. This is very important. Why? Because the left brain, the logic side, will respond by evaluating the numbers, examples, facts and figures as they are presented.

A story-opening phrase "fixates" the left brain and frees up the right brain. Because of our conditioning regarding stories our right brain imagines what a pleasant experience the story will be and we become open and receptive. By using a story to convey ideas people are then able to visualize, imagine, trust, be hopeful, retain and to act.

Stories create anticipation, enhance attention, and increase retention. Simply put, stories help to take people from where they are now to where they want to be. If we want people to take decisive action, we need to create the future they want in their imagination. That's what our business is all about, creating the future in our partners' minds that they want and can have.
