Network Racks - Choosing the Right Network Rack for your Hardware
How to Select a Network Rack
When considering a network rack, there are many factors you will want to consider. After all the equipment housed in these racks are not inexpensive, and the data your network hardware holds may be invaluable.
So select a network rack that is functional, durable and high quality - this is not an area to skimp.
From a practical standpoint, we'll consider the five things to keep in mind when selecting network racks.
Weight and Dimensions of Your Network Hardware
The first thing you want to look at is the actual physical dimensions and weight of your network equipment. Once you have identified the physical dimensions you can begin looking for a server cabinet. You will need a cabinet to can handle the hardware with the largest dimensions.
You may also want to allow for expansion and growth. Do you anticipate adding servers, network hardware or additional equipment in the future? If so, you should consider a network storage solution that will accommodate these future hardware purchases. Doing this now can save you time and money in the future.
Commonly, there three types of racks and network cabinets:
Freestanding Racks
Wall Mount Cabinets
Versatile (can be used as a wall mount, desktop, or freestanding)
Usable Rack Mount Space
The usable mounting space or dimensions are different from the network rack or cabinets dimensions. What this refers to are the dimensions inside the mounting area of the server racks.
It is a good idea to allow extra space in front and behind the network equipment mounted inside the cabinet for cables, cords and accessories. If the hardware has power cables, network cables, etc.and most do, it simplifies the installation.
You may also want to consider allowing extra space for providing maintenance to equipment.
Access to Your Network Hardware
You should also consider how your equipment will be accessed and if you need a server rack to accommodate those access areas.
Most hardware will only require front access. Some equipment however, may require side or rear access. So consider hardware accessibility when you set out to buy server racks.
Network Equipment Accessories
Consider what sort of accessories your network hardware will require. Servers generate a lot of heat, many cabinet and rack systems require cooling systems as a precautionary measure.
Other common server rack accessories include:
Hardware shelves
Cable management systems
Power distribution systems
Solid panel shelves
Grounding systems
Again, when you consider the value of your network data, it makes sense to consider all appropriate server rack accessories as well as a network cabinet system that can accommodate those accessories.
Special Requirements
The previous four considerations apply to most network hardware storage solutions.
However, certain types of network equipment may require special considerations when selecting a network storage solution.
It is best to carefully read any restrictions that are noted by the equipment manufacturer for any special housing accommodation.
Selecting the Right Network Rack for Your Needs
Hopefully the above items will help you as you consider selecting a network rack or storage solution for your servers and hardware.
