CompTIA A+ consists of 4 training sections; you're seen as an achiever in A+ when you've gained exams for 2 out of 4 subjects
. This is why most colleges offer only two of the training courses. The truth is you will need the information on each subject as industry will ask for an awareness of the entire course. Don't feel pressured to take all four exams, but it seems common sense that you learn about all four.
Training courses in A+ teach diagnostic techniques and fault-finding - both remote access and hands-on, in addition to building, fixing, repairing and understanding antistatic conditions. If you would like to be someone who works in a multi-faceted environment - supporting, fixing and maintaining networks, add Network+ to your CompTIA A+, or follow the Microsoft route - MCP's, MCSA or MCSE to give you a deeper understanding of the way networks work.
With all the options available, is it any wonder that nearly all newcomers to the industry have no idea which career they will enjoy. Perusing lists of IT career possibilities is no use whatsoever. The vast majority of us have no idea what the neighbours do for a living - so we have no hope of understanding the intricacies of any specific IT role. Achieving an informed decision really only appears from a systematic investigation of several different factors:
* Personality plays a significant role - what gets you 'up and running', and what are the activities that get you down.
* Why you want to consider starting in the IT industry - maybe you want to achieve a long-held goal like being self-employed for example.
* Your earning needs that are important to you?
* Understanding what typical job types and sectors are - including what sets them apart.
* The time and energy you'll have available to commit your training.
For most people, considering these areas requires a good chat with an experienced pro who can explain things properly. And not just the qualifications - but the commercial requirements and expectations besides.
Searching for your first position in IT sometimes feels easier to handle with a Job Placement Assistance program. Because of the great demand for appropriately skilled people in Great Britain today, there's no need to make too much of this option though. It's actually not as hard as some people make out to land your first job as long as you're correctly trained and certified.
You would ideally have CV and Interview advice and support though; also we would encourage all students to update their CV the day they start training - don't procrastinate and leave it till you've finished your exams. Having the possibility of an interview is better than being rejected. Many junior support roles are given to trainees who are still at an early stage in their studies. If it's important to you to find work near your home, then it's quite likely that a specialist locally based employment agency might be more appropriate than the trainer's recruitment division, for they're going to have insider knowledge of local employment needs.
A big frustration for many training providers is how much people are focused on studying to become certified, but how little effort that student will then put into getting the position they have acquired skills for. Get out there and hustle - you might find it's fun.
The old fashioned style of teaching, utilising reference manuals and books, is often a huge slog for most of us. If you're nodding as you read this, check out study materials that are on-screen and interactive. Many years of research has time and time again demonstrated that getting into our studies physically, is much more conducive to long-term memory.
Search for a course where you'll receive a library of DVD-ROM's - you'll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, and then have the opportunity to fine-tune your skills in fully interactive practice sessions. You'll definitely want a demonstration of the study materials from your training provider. You'll want to see slide-shows, instructor-led videos and fully interactive skills-lab's.
Go for CD or DVD ROM based materials where possible. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.
You should remember: the course itself or the accreditation isn't what this is about; the job or career that you're getting the training for is. A lot of colleges seem to put too much weight in the piece of paper. Don't let yourself become one of those unfortunate students that choose a course that seems 'fun' or 'interesting' - only to end up with a qualification for a career they'll never really get any satisfaction from.
You also need to know your leanings around career progression and earning potential, plus your level of ambition. It makes sense to understand what (if any) sacrifices you'll need to make for a particular role, what particular qualifications are needed and where you'll pick-up experience from. Our recommendation would be to take advice from an experienced industry advisor before you begin a particular learning programme, so you're sure from the outset that the specific package will give the skills necessary.
