Networking It Courses - Thoughts

Training for your CompTIA A+ comprises of 4 specialised sectors - the requirement is exam passes in 2 specialities to reach the level of A+ competent

. Because of this, most colleges limit their course to 2 of the training options. To us, this is too much of a compromise - of course you can gain accreditation, but training on all 4 will prepare you more fully for when you're in industry, where you'll need a more comprehensive understanding. This is why you need education in the whole course.

Once you start your CompTIA A+, you'll be taught how to work in antistatic conditions and build and fix computers. Diagnostic techniques and fault finding are also on the syllabus, as is remote access. Perhaps you see yourself as a man or woman who works in a multi-faceted environment - supporting, fixing and maintaining networks, add Network+ to your CompTIA A+, or follow the Microsoft route - MCP's, MCSA or MCSE in order to have a deeper understanding of how networks work.

Several companies have a handy Job Placement Assistance facility, designed to steer you into your first job. Sometimes, there is more emphasis than is necessary on this service, for it's really not that difficult for any focused and well taught person to secure a job in IT - as there is such a shortage of trained staff.

One important thing though, don't procrastinate and wait until you have completed your exams before polishing up your CV. Right at the beginning of your training, mark down what you're doing and get promoting! It's not unusual to find that you'll secure your initial role whilst you're still studying (even in the early stages). If your course details aren't on your CV (and it's not being looked at by employers) then you won't even be considered! The top companies to help you land that job are most often specialist locally based employment services. Because they only get paid when they place you, they're perhaps more focused on results.

Please ensure you don't invest a great deal of time on your training course, and then do nothing more and leave it up to everyone else to find you a job. Stop procrastinating and make your own enquiries. Invest as much focus into landing your first job as you did to get trained.

It's so important to understand this key point: You have to get round-the-clock 24x7 professional support from mentors and instructors. Later, you'll kick yourself if you don't follow this rule rigidly. Find a good quality service with help available at any time of the day or night (even 1am on Sunday morning!) Make sure it's always direct access to tutors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages - so you're constantly waiting for a call-back when it's convenient for them.

It's possible to find professional companies who give students online direct access support around the clock - including evenings, nights and weekends. You can't afford to accept less than you need and deserve. Direct-access round-the-clock support is the only way to go for computer-based courses. Maybe late-evening study is not your thing; often though, we're out at work while the support is live.

Doing your bit in revolutionary new technology really is electrifying. You personally play your part in impacting progress around the world. We're in the very early stages of beginning to see just how technology is going to shape our lives. Technology and the web will profoundly alter how we see and interrelate with the rest of the world over the coming decades.

And keep in mind that the average salary in the IT sector across the UK is much better than in the rest of the economy, so in general you'll be in a good position to receive considerably more in the IT sector, than you'd expect to earn elsewhere. It seems there is not a hint of a downturn for IT jobs expansion throughout this country. The sector continues to grow enormously, and as we have a skills gap that means we only typically have three IT workers for every four jobs it's most unlikely that things will be any different for the significant future.

With so much choice, is it any wonder that a large percentage of trainees get stuck choosing the job they will enjoy. Perusing long lists of different and confusing job titles is a complete waste of time. The vast majority of us have no idea what our next-door neighbours do at work each day - so we're in the dark as to the complexities of a new IT role. Generally, the way to deal with this issue properly comes from a full conversation around a number of areas:

* Your hobbies and interests - these can point towards what areas will satisfy you.

* What is the time-frame for the training process?

* What are your thoughts on salary vs job satisfaction?

* Understanding what the normal job types and markets are - plus how they're different to each other.

* What effort, commitment and time you'll commit getting qualified.

To be honest, it's obvious that the only real way to investigate these issues is via a conversation with an advisor or professional who has a background in IT (as well as the commercial needs and requirements.)
